Recent discussion about the mental causation(MC) finds its impetus in Davidson. His theory of MC, the so-called “anomalous monism,” induced abundant philosophical discussion about explaining how MC is possible. However, it seems to me that he has never provided any concretely systemic definition of the nature of the strict law and any explanation of why causation is tied to the strict law. My main aim in this paper is to argue that although in explaining MC the nonreductive-based counterfactual account is not strong enough in some sense, it needs not be in need of the thick conception of causation and thus the property identity by critically discussing the counterfactual account, and the productive/generative account, of mental causation that were supported by Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim respectively. In so doing, I will argue that a version of event identity theory helps the counterfactual account explain the possibility of MC, which is untimately based on the regularity/nomologicality. Furthermore, my conception of event identity provides the best solution the problem of MC, avoiding both the problems of mental epiphenomenalism and exclusion principle Kim espoused. In this paper, I will not directly examine the well-known supervenience/exclusion argument: Instead I will look into the reason why Kim came to espouse the argument.
