Hume has often been derided as a philosopher-historian whose commitment to the uniformities of human nature left no room for a true understanding of historical change. In addition, it has been asserted by Hume scholars, that Hume deserted philosophical studies in favor of historical at about the age of forty, and that these areas were, in Hume's mind, completely independent. The purpose of this article is to show that Hume's science of human nature is not antihistorical, and that Hume considered his historical writings as an extension of his philosophical work. To address these issues, I will first examine that Hume's principles of human nature in Treatise is not the antihistorical to be a barrier in explaining the change and development of history, but the methodological as a precondition which makes history possible. Secondly, by exploring that history which provides not only historical materials with the science of human nature but also excites our imagnation and sense is nothing but ‘philosophy teaching by examples', I will argue that history and philosophy are the warp and woof of the science of human nature.

흄은 인간학에서 인간본성의 항구성을 주장함으로써 역사적 변화의 참된 성격을 이해할 수 없게 하는 반역사주의적인 인간학을 전개하였다는 비판을 받아왔다. 게다가 흄이 40세 초반을 기점으로 본격적으로 착수한 역사적 저술은 그가 역사적 탐구를 위해 철학적 탐구를 접었다는 해석을 낳았는데 이는 흄에게 있어 역사와 철학은 별개의 영역임을 전제하는 것이다. 이에 대해 본 논문은 흄의 인간학이 반역사적이지 않으며 또한 그에게 있어 역사란 철학의 연장이라는 사실을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 첫째, 흄이 『인성론』에서 주장하는 인간본성의 원리가 역사의 변화와 발전을 설명하는데 있어 장애가 되는 반역사적인 주장이 아니며 한 걸음 더 나아가 역사학을 가능하게 하는 방법론적 원리라는 주장을 살펴보고, 둘째 흄에게 있어 역사는 인간학의 탐구 자료를 제공 할 뿐 아니라 차갑고 무감동한 철학과는 달리 상상과 감각을 자극하기에 역사란 실례를 통해 가르치는 철학임을 보여줌으로써 결국 흄에게 있어 역사란 철학과 더불어 인간학을 짜가는 씨줄과 날줄임을 밝히고자 한다.
