This article examines Descartes’ classification of science starting from Ariew’s interpretation. On the belief that Ariew is on the right track in both his perspective and the method of approach, we start from his complaint against Descartes’ tree of knowledge to solve some problems raised by it. Important issues will arise in due order, and we expect to fathom the direction of future study by discussing them. Ultimaely, it will be noted that Ariew’s interpretation is incomplete in (1) its insufficient discussion of the method of analysis and synthesis, (2) lack of the developmental study of Descartes, and (3) paucity of the discussion of the priority issue between mathematics and physics.

이 글은 애류의 연구를 출발점으로 하여 학문 분류에 관한 데카르트의 견해를 검토하고자 한다. 애류의 문제의식과 연구 방법 모두가 올바른 궤도에 놓여 있다고 믿으면서, 그가 데카르트의 지식의 나무에 대해 터트린 불평으로부터 출발하여 그 불평으로부터 촉발된 의문들을 조금씩 해결해 나감으로써 주요 쟁점들을 자연스레 부각시키고, 그것들을 지면이 허락하는 한에서 논의하는 가운데 다시 향후 연구의 청사진이 그려지기를 기대하는 것이다. 그 결과, (1) 분석과 종합의 방법에 대한 불충분한 논의, (2) 데카르트의 사상에 대한 발전론적 이해의 미흡함, 그리고 (3) 수학과 자연학의 우위 문제에 대한 논의의 불충분성이 지적될 것이다.
