초록

영어

Kim Hongdo(1745-after1806), the most celebrated of court painters in the eighteenth century Korea, excelled in painting on a wide range of subjects, such as portraits, figures, landscape, birds-and-flowers, genre scenes etc. Judging from his surviving works, he is often considered the most versatile painter in the Joseon dynasty. In genre painting, especially, Kim Hongdo was outstanding in capturing everyday activities realistically. With his lively depiction of common people’s daily life, Kim’s accomplishment is unsurpassed. He also played an important role in the localizing Daoist immortals’ pictorial image in Korea. Daoist immortals in his paintings became gods of fortune and longevity and merged with popular belief in Joseon society. Furthermore, King Jeongjo assigned Kim Hongdo to oversee the production of a large Buddhist wall painting in Yongju-sa, a temple in Hwaseong built to look after the tomb of Crown Prince Sado, the king’s father. After finishing this project in 1790, Kim continued to incorporate Buddhist subjects into his art in various ways. During the Joseon dynasty, Buddhism had never been officially recognized as a state religion but had its staunch critics among the literati. Therefore, Kim Hongdo’s choice to embrace Buddhism as his artistic theme is contradict with his Confucian persona. This paper examines the significance of Kim Hongdo’s artistic responses to Buddhism with special attention to three paintings with the same inscription. The inscription comes from the famous Tang dynasty poet Li Bai’s(701-762) poem, Songs for Sengjia and means “chanting repeatedly in numerous times as many as the sands of Ganges River.” These are not examples of poetry-based painting but obviously votive images in content and style and exhibit his sympathy with Buddhism.
