The issue of this paper is the moral difference between making people happy and making happy people. Is giving a birth to a child who is likely to live a happy life as morally right as making living people happy? Or, is preventing a potential child from being conceived, if she or he once born is predicted to live a miserable life of extremely low quality, as morally right as giving a birth to a child who is likely to live a happy life? Asymmetry Thesis answers in the negative to both questions. In this paper the proposed arguments for the thesis and their criticisms are scrutinized and a new argument for the thesis is presented. The crucial point of this argument is based upon the observation that the nature of the problem at stake is logical, which is well shown in the discussion of what is called ‘the lottery paradox’.

이 논문은 사람을 행복하게 만드는 것과 행복한 사람을 낳는 것 사이의 도덕적 차이에 관한 쟁점을 다룬다. 이미 존재하는 사람을 행복하게 만드는 것이 도덕적으로 옳은 일인 것만큼, 행복하게 살아갈 사람을 태어나게 하는 것 역시 도덕적으로 옳은 것인가? 또한 아직 잉태되지 않았지만 불행한 삶을 살 것이 분명한 사람은 태어나지 않게 하는 것이 도덕적으로 옳은 일인 것만큼, 태어나면 행복한 삶을 살 것이 분명한 생명체는 태어나게 하는 것이 도덕적으로 옳은 일인가? 이른바 ‘비대칭 논제’는 이 물음들에 부정적으로 대답한다. 이 논문은 비대칭 논제에 대한 기존의 옹호 논증과 반대 논증을 비판적으로 다루면서, 비대칭 논제를 옹호하는 새로운 논증을 제안한다. 이 논문에서 제안하는 새로운 논증은 우리가 다루는 문제가 ‘복권의 역설’이라는 논리적 문제와 그 성격을 공유한다는 관찰에 근거한다.
