The object of this thesis is to find the origin of happiness in Eastern philosophy and reconsider a modern meaning about happiness. Even though the immediate discussion of Happiness is hardly exist in eastern, scholars see happiness as the attainment to a ideal goal. However, in light of The Book of Change, the idal goal is happiness in itself and The Book of Changes is the text to give a humankind the happiness, not pursuing happiness by attaining the goal. I tried finding the meaning of happiness through the logical and mutual structure in The Book of Changes. All things have meaning by having interrelationships with others and exist when they make harmony with others in that relationship. The harmony means harmony from between father and mother, husband and wife, and siblings to between the king and his subjects, based on the harmony with the heaven, the earth and human. We can interrelated with others through this harmony and find the ground of happiness in this process. That is to say, the interrelationship can be accomplished when people understand and trust each other by having meeting with others. The condition that this interrelationship through harmony is realized is the welfare and happy society as The Book of Changes say. This is the view of happiness in The Book of Changes. Even though this view of happiness is ideal, it can be the opportunity to reflect a modern society to chase the materialistic happiness.

본 연구는 동양철학에서 행복의 연원을 찾고, 행복에 대한 현대적 의미를 재고하는데 목적이 있다. 동양에서 행복에 대한 직접적인 논의는 거의 찾아볼 수 없지만, 학자들은 각 학파들이 이상적인 목표에 도달한 것을 행복의 의미로 받아들인다. 하지만 『주역』은 이상적인 목표에 도달해서 행복을 추구하는 것이 아니라, 이상적인 목표 자체가 행복이며 인간에게 행복을 주기 위한 텍스트이다. 필자는 『주역』의 조화의 논리와 소통의 구조 속에서 행복의 의미를 찾으려고 시도했다. 모든 만물은 상호 관계를 통해서 의미를 가지며, 그 관계 속에서 서로 조화를 이루었을 때 존재한다. 조화는 하늘과 땅과 사람의 조화를 바탕으로 부모와 부부와 형제의 조화부터 군주와 신하와 백성의 조화를 말한다. 우리는 이러한 조화를 통해서 상호 소통하고, 그 과정 속에서 행복의 근거를 찾을 수 있다. 즉 소통은 타인과의 만남에서 상호간의 인격과 권리를 이해하고 신뢰를 주고받을 때 완성되는 것이다. 조화를 통해서 소통이 이루어진 상태가 바로 『주역』에서 말하는 복지사회이고 행복한 사회이다. 이것이 바로 『주역』의 행복관(행복론)이다. 필자는 『주역』에서 말하는 행복이 추상적이고 이상적인 개념일지라도 물질만능주의적인 행복 개념에 치우친 현대사회의 입장을 반성해보는 계기를 마련할 수 있다고 본다.
