Epistemology and ethics are both concerned with evaluations: ethics with evaluations of conduct, epistemology with evaluations of beliefs and other cognitive acts. In this sense, Epistemology and ethics are both normative disciplines. Some philosophers have thought that there is more than just a parallel between epistemology and ethics. They have thought that epistemic terms are properly defined by means of ethical terms. If this is correct, epistemological statements are complicated ethical statements, and, presumably, epistemology is a branch of ethics. Then, do we have a moral duty to believe propositions the degree that the evidence supports them? What sorts of duties are there in relation to believing? To have a duty to do something implies we can do it. But is believing within our power? Or is it forced on us? More generally, what is the relationship between the will and belief? Can we obtain beliefs directly on willing to have them? This paper discuss the view that we can obtain beliefs directly upon performing an act of the will, and we have moral duties to believe according to the available evidence. The view that we can obtain beliefs directly on willing to believe them is called volitionalism. Proponents of this view argues that just as there is an ethics of conduct in relation to moral duties, there is an ethics of belief in relation to believing. I classify two types of volitionalism, viz, direct and indirect volitionalism, and focus on direct volitionalism. I offer Pojman"s two arguments against direct volitionalism: the phenomenological argument and the logic of belief argument. I argue that there is something both psychologically aberrant and conceptually incoherent about obtaining beliefs through acts of will.
