The aim of this article is to focus on the characteristics of Zhuxi's natural philosophy by examining several aspects of his metaphysics which is closely related to his natural philosophy. In this paper, organicism which has long been regarded as a feature of pre-modern East Asian thought is applied as a methodological lead. The traditional notion closest to organicism is wanwuyiti (the theory of all-things-being-one-body) which has been passed down from the ancient era. Zhuxi added the cognition of separation between entities, and between the subject and the object by giving his own analysis using liyifenshu (the theory of universal variety) to wanwuyiti. It means that wanwuyiti meant ambivalence of transmission and agitation in Zhuxi's learng. For Zhuxi, moralcentrism was regarded as a primary factor which hindered the validity of the concept of strict natural laws. He strongly pursued the fundamentals beyond the phenomenal world, and in many cases those fundamentals refer to the principle of behavioral norms. Zhuxi emphasized the investigation into the object rather than the internal rumination in his epistemology. However, his epistemology was dominated by totality which originated from the notion of li and qi, thereby he was not able to go further than the preceding methodology which emphasized the experience in cognition.
