In this paper, I tried to inquiry into the origin of nuturing life. As you know, in traditional eastern thoughts, nothing is more important than nuturing life or self cultivation. But, I have not yet seen such a work that investigated the nuturing life before the entrance of buddhism into china. My main hypothesis in this paper is that shamanism is one of the most important origins of nuturing life. To demonstrate and reinforce this hypothesis, I presented some reasons for the hypothesis. First, I presented the sub hypothesis that 春秋 period just before the appearance of nuturing life is the age under shamanism. second, I showed the fact that the composition of traditional chinese shamanism, preparation for possession by god and possession corresponds to the composition of nuturing life. Then what is the inheritance of nuturing life from shamanism? I proposed that 導引術 and the great mental capacity is inherited from shamanism. On this proposal, I interpreted the life of nuturing life in text 莊子 is not individual life but the ability of sympathy. All this new interpretation is subjected to the purpose of proving that shamanism is one of the most important origins of nuturing life.

동양삼국에서 양생은 신체에 관한 것으로 수양은 정신 쪽에 치우친 것으로 받아들여지고 있다. 그러나 이런 통속적 이해는 양생의 올바른 이해에 문제를 야기해왔다는 것이 연구자의 생각이다. 그것은 양생의 생을 개체적 생명에 한정시키기 때문이다. 본고에서 연구자는 수양을 특수한 양생이라고 함으로써 양생의 일종으로 보았다. 그리고 이런 개념상의 포섭관계위에서 양생의 연원을 검토해보았다. 양생의 성립시기를 전국으로 잡을 때, 춘추시기는 양생직전시기라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 양생을 무속의 시대적인 양상으로 규정한다면, 춘추시기가 무속적인 시대였다는 점은 양생과 무속의 관련성을 강화할 것이다. 춘추시기가 주술적인 시대였음은 틀림없는 사실이다. 그런데 『춘추』의 자료에는 양생과 무속의 관련성을 강화하는 것도 보인다. 예를 들어, 빙의의 조건으로 덕을 언급하는 자료가 그렇다. 빙의를 당하는 쪽의 조건에 의해서 빙의가 이루어지는 것으로 보고 있으므로, 그것은 수양을 조건으로 하는 빙의라고 할 것이다. 양생에 관한 대표문헌인 『관자』에서 양생은 무속적 구도와 대응한다. 이런 대응은 양생과 무속의 관련성을 직접적으로 증명한다. 예를 들어, 심에 신이 머문다고 하는 것은 접신에 부합하는데, 그 조건으로 말해지는 욕심을 없이한다거나 마음을 깨끗이한다는 것은 제관이 접신을 위해 齋戒하는 과정에 대응한다. 유사한 맥락에서 장자의 心齋는 제관의 재계에서 유래했을 가능성이 있다. 이상의 논의는 무속이 양생의 중요연원이라는 견해를 강화한다. 물론, 양생의 모든 것이 무속으로부터 유래했다고는 말할 수 없겠지만, 본고의 논의에 토대하건데 무속보다 광범위하고 크게 영향을 미친 연원은 없다고 할 것이다.
