Begging the Question is a fallacy. This is common sense in everyday life and even logic class. But there are enormous controversies about begging the question among informal logicians and argument theorists. Is it always fallacious? When an argument can be question begging? If a question begging argument is fallacious, why is it? To answer these thoroughly, the conception of argument and argument evaluation must be examined. This paper shows that the wide conception of argument works well enough, that the soundness of argument is not sufficient and sometimes not necessary, and that to evaluate arguments we need to consider the specific purpose of argument as well as the general one. On this basis, the conception of begging the question and the fallaciousness of begging the question will be illuminated.

선결문제요구 논증은 오류이다. 이는 기초 논리학 수준의 상식이다. 그러나 선결문제요구에 관한 최근의 논의를 보면 이런 상식 자체가 검토를 요구하는 논란거리이다. 여기서는 선결문제요구의 오류 여부를 알기 위해서, 선결문제요구의 개념과 선결문제요구의 주체인 논증 개념을 명확히 하고자 했다. 또한, 선결문제요구에 관한 상식적 견해를 검토하기 위해서 논증평가의 표준, 특히 건전성 기준에 관한 논의를 전개하고자 한다. 그래서 선결문제요구는 순환성을 의미한다고 주장하였고, 논증의 일반 목적이 아닌 특수 목적에 따라 선결문제요구 논증은 오류일 수 있고 아닐 수도 있다는 점을 지적하였다. 또한, 선결문제요구의 오류 여부에 관한 논의를 통해서, 우리는 건전성 기준이 논증평가의 일반적 기준으로서 충분하거나 필요하지 않다는 점을 밝힐 수 있다.
