The pre-Qin Confucianism represented by Confucius, Mencius and Xunzi regards that politics is connected with morality. According to them, a ruler and the ruling class should be virtuous by means of self-cultivation and temperance and run the government with virtue and moral edification rather than law and institutions. In the Confucian ideas, the term 'de' and other virtues are critical concepts in the moral cultivation of the ruler or the ruling class as well as in their political actions. In order to understand the pre-Qin Confucianism, it is accordingly necessary for us to grasp the concept of 'de' and other virtues. Therefore, this article attempts to examine what specific virtues the term 'de' encompasses in the Analects, the Mencius, and the Xunzi so as to present a more comprehensive picture of the concept of 'de' and particular virtues.

공(孔)･맹(孟)･순(荀)으로 대표되는 선진 유가는 정치 영역과 윤리･도덕 영역을 동일한 선상에서 고려했다. 그들은 통치자와 지배 계층이 자기 수양과 자기 절제를 통해 도덕적으로 성숙한 인격자가 되어야 하고, 법과 제도보다 덕과 교화를 통해 정치적 행위를 해야 한다고 강조했다. 이러한 유가적 정치사상에서 ‘덕(德)’과 다양한 덕목들은 통치자나 지배 계층의 자기 수양뿐만 아니라 정치 행위에서 논의되는 핵심 개념들이다. 그러므로 선진 유가의 사상을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 그들의 논의 속에 등장하는 ‘덕(德)’과 덕목들을 이해하는 것이 필수적이다. 이 논문에서는 우선 『논어』, 『맹자』, 『순자』에서 ‘덕’이 어떤 개별적 덕목들을 포괄하는지를 중심으로 살펴봄으로써 전체적 이해로 나아가는 하나의 단계를 제공하고자 한다. 이러한 문헌들에서 ‘덕’ 개념의 포괄적 측면을 분석해보면, 공･맹･순의 ‘덕’ 개념이 행위 경향에서 (도덕적) 성품으로, 나아가 성격 특질까지 의미하는 하향적 확장의 길을 걸어갔음을 볼 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 흐름은 공･맹･순의 마음에 대한 관심의 깊이와 차이를 반영한 것이다.
