This paper aims at three goals in critically reviewing Newman’s theory of health as expanding consciousness. First, I will show that it involves the dichotomy between the body and consciousness, which gives rise to an inconsistency with her holistic conception of nursing. Second, I will show that it is a form of ‘apex theory’ and the notion of ‘expanding consciousness’ itself is a metaphorical construct. Finally, I will suggest that for Newman to meet the first two difficulties consistently, her notion of ‘transcendental caring’ needs to be revised in naturalistic terms. This reinterpretation can be done most successfully by drawing on the large body of empirical evidence from the 2nd generation cognitive science, and this will make Newman’s notion of caring more workable in practicing nursing care. In particular, a naturalistic reinterpretation of caring makes it possible to practice ‘empirically responsible caring’ that does not go beyond our realistic experiences in nursing service. I suggest that this reinterpretation does not just deal with Newman’s inconsistencies successfully, but also opens up a new possibility of undermining the apparent dichotomy between objectivity and relativity pervading in nursing theories.
