Religion is just a stopper in conversation to Rorty. Rorty’s sarcastic attitude reflects polytheism having anti-monotheistic nuance, and it is reconstructed in the name of neopragmatism which rejects any frame or restriction fixed by restricting religious space to the private discourse. However, such neopragmatic view of religion dismantles religion itself, and also, it is a hasty view to degrade mental･structural status which religion occupies in public discourse. The major purpose of this paper is to examine Rorty’s neopragmatic view of religion to show that Rorty’s view of religion as a form of mere private discourse hides the major strengths of public discourse internalized in the transmission of original sin, prophecy, and incarnation in Christian conventions, and also mitigates religious symbols practically applicable in the chapter of public discourse as hermeneutical theology. In conclusion, explaining the theoretical strata of multi-layer hermeneutics grounded on the body but falling into reductive error with the name of ‘modified epiphany’, I try to present the practical possibility of natural theology. Above all, I will provide a new horizon to explain properly why it is not a trivial matter that modified epiphany says spirit or religion originates from the body.

로티에게 종교는 대화의 훼방꾼일 뿐이다. 그의 이러한 냉소적 태도는 반일신론적 뉘앙스를 풍기는 다신론이며, 종교적 공간을 사적담론으로 제약함으로써 미리 고착된 그 어떤 틀과 속박도 거부하는 신실용주의라는 이름으로 재구성된다. 하지만 이러한 신실용주의적 종교관은 종교 자체를 해체시키고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 종교가 공적담론에서 차지하는 정신적･구조적 위상을 격하시키는 성급한 시각이다. 이 글의 주요 목적은 로티의 신실용주의적 종교관에 대한 검토를 통해 그가 유지하는 종교의 사적담론이 기독교 전통의 원죄, 예언, 성육신 전승에 내재되어 있는 공적담론의 중요한 강점을 가리고 있다는 것을 밝히고, 해석학적 신학으로 공적담론의 장에서 현실적으로 적용 가능한 종교적 상징으로 완화시키는 데 있다. 필자는 결론으로 몸을 토대로 하지만 환원주의적 오류에 빠져 있는 중충해석학의 이론적 층위를 ‘완화된 현현’이라는 이름으로 해명해 보임으로써 실제적인 자연신학의 가능성을 제시할 것이다. 무엇보다도 완화된 현현은 영적･종교적 삶이 몸으로부터 기인한다고 말하는 것이 왜 작은 문제가 아닌지를 적절하게 해명할 수 있는 새로운 지평도 제공할 것이다.
