In this paper I have tried to argue that Rorty’s viewpoint on solidarity has some practical consequences in behalf of making better society. Rorty has made an objection to the idea that prominent theorist could find out how to synthesize theory and practice. According to him, there is no reason to believe that we could find theoretical foundation for human solidarity through investigation of human nature. He argues that we could propose solidarity, even if we have no any theoretical ground for our practice. His viewpoint on solidarity has been criticized as relativism. I don’t think his viewpoint obstructs our effort to make solidarity, since we can suggest many reasons to make solidarity without any universal theoretical ground. However, I agree that his idea does not give an impression to activists who should unite people for practical purpose. I suggest that his description on solidarity must be read not as a practical suggestion for activists, but as a theoretical suggestion for his academic colleagues and philosophers. It is practical effects of his idea that it makes us free from the obsession that we should find out the universal theoretical ground for our practice and makes us free to think new alternatives for our practical problems.

이 글에서 논자는 연대의 가능성에 관한 로티의 관점이 가진 긍부정적 요소를 평가해보고자 하였다. 로티는 이론과 실천의 통합이라는 오래된 플라톤주의적 전제에 이의를 제기했다. 인간본성에 대한 이론적 탐구를 통해 실천적 연대의 토대를 마련할 수 있다는 생각은 근거가 없는 것이라고 보는 로티는 반표상주의적이며 맥락주의적인 관점을 견지하면서도 연대를 주장할 수 있다고 주장한다. 이론과 실천이 체계적으로 통합될 수 없다는 관점에서 출발하는 로티의 주장은 상대주의적이라는 비판을 받아왔다. 논자는 로티와 같이 이론을 사적인 영역에 제한시키는 것이 실천적 연대를 위한 모든 논의를 불가능하게 하는 것은 아니라고 생각한다. 설사 보편적인 진리를 발견하지 못했다고 하더라도 실천적인 규범적 주장을 하지 못할 이유는 없기 때문이다. 그러나 로티의 주장은 현실적인 연대를 이루어내야 하는 실천가들에게 강력한 인상을 줄 수 없다는 점에는 동의한다. 논자는 로티의 연대에 관한 서술이 실천적 제안으로서는 별로 의미가 없으며, 그의 동료 이론가들이나 철학자들의 철학함에 대한 평가로 읽혀야 한다고 생각한다. 그런 점은 로티의 텍스트가 갖는 한계라고 할 수 있겠으나, 그의 연대에 관한 주장은 우리의 실천이 보편적 이론에 토대를 두어야 한다는 이론적 강박에서 벗어나게 함으로써 다양한 대안을 모색할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 나름대로 실천적 효과를 갖는다고 생각한다.
