The aim of this paper is to reveal the ecological directivity of Donghak(東學) as a Korean native religion and to philosophically estimate its significances. Today, the possibilities of ecological catastrophe caused by human activities seem to suggest that our view of nature must be changed epochally. Accordingly, most of contemporary philosophical or religious symbol-systems of normative sort are striving to accuse ‘anthropocentrism’ of being extremely violent and prove that they are not ‘anthropocentric’ in order to be recognized as reasonable by the public. Donghak is likewise doing so by arguing that it has established itself as an originally anti-anthropocentric system of ideas through the medium of the healthy ecological directivity of holistic cosmology and ‘Sicheonju(侍天主)’ doctrine characteristic of it. In this paper I will examine how persuasive such an ecological self-justification of Donghak is. This work will come to reveal both the ecological significances and the limitations of Donghak as a Korean native religion. And as a result of this examination, I will come to critically inspect whether a quasi-nationalist academic tradition of Korean studies which has opposed ‘our biocentrism’ to ‘western anthropocentrism’ is proper or not.

이 글의 목적은 한국의 민족종교 동학의 교의에 내포된 생태주의적 방향성을 드러내어 그 의의를 철학적으로 평가해 보려는 데 있다. 오늘날 인간이 자초한 생태적 파국의 위험은 자연을 바라보는 인간의 시선에 일대 전환이 있지 않으면 안 된다는 점을 강하게 시사하는 듯하다. 이에 따라 ‘인간중심주의’의 폭력성을 탄핵하며 자신이 그것의 보균자가 아니라는 점을 입증하는 일은 종교와 철학을 비롯한 현대의 모든 규범적 상징체계가 자신의 정당성을 인정받기 위해 거쳐야 할 시대적 통과의례가 된 것처럼 보인다. 동학도 역시 이러한 경향에 가세해 왔는데, 이 경우에 동학은 특유의 전일주의적 우주론과 시천주(侍天主) 교리로 건전한 생태주의적 방향성을 처음부터 확보함으로써 말썽 많은 인간중심주의와 본원적으로 무관한 사상체계로 자리매김해 왔다는 논리가 구사되곤 한다. 필자는 이 글에서 동학의 그러한 생태주의적 자기변호가 과연 얼마만큼의 설득력을 지닐 수 있는지를 규명해 보려고 한다. 이것은 한국적 토양에서 자생한 민족종교로서의 동학이 지구적 생태위기의 해결이라는 시대적 과제와 관련하여 지니는 의의와 한계를 동시에 드러내는 작업이 될 것이다. 그리고 이러한 해명의 결과로서 필자는 ‘서구의 인간중심주의’와 ‘우리의 생명중심주의’를 대척적으로 맞세우는 유사(類似)민족주의적 학풍을 철학적 논변의 시험대에 올려놓고 그것의 타당성 여부를 비판적으로 검증해 보게 될 것이다.
