The main aim of this paper is to inquire into some philosophical implications of Putnam’s argument for “the entanglement of fact and value.” Despite his contribution to the collapse of fact/value dichotomy, Putnam doesn’t seem to account for the nature of fact and value. And I would like to suggest that this question can be better answered in terms of the notion of the embodied experience. The fact/value dichotomy is deeply grounded in the concept of fact. And Putnam set out to show that the very concept of fact presupposes the notion of value. Thus Putnam argues that if we accept the objectivity of fact, then we also have to admit the objectivity of value. Hence Putnam has only shown that fact and value are interdependent. But he, in fact, doesn’t seem to offer an answer to the ground of objectivity of value. This difficulty seems to come from the fact that Putnam conceives value as ontologically queer. Instead, I believe that the nature of fact and value can better be explained in naturalistic terms. Drawing on the experientialist perspective, I suggest that fact and value are ways of the embodied experience.
