The plan of intercultural philosophy for Mall is characterized as ‘intercultural comparative philosophy’. He distinguishes three kinds of the model of hermeneutics, which are ‘identity model’, ‘model of difference’ and ‘analogical model’. He presents the ‘analogical model’ of them as a suitable model for intercultural hermeneutics. If you read many other cultures on the ground of the ‘identity model’, you will destroy the uniqueness of the other cultures and try to expand the only uniqueness of this model, because you insist that 'identity model' has the universal validity and the criteria for all the traditional cultures. If on the ground of the ‘model of difference’, there is no starting point here to hold dialogue between different cultures. The ‘model of difference’ thinks a variety of cultures as they are. So this model goes further than the ‘identity model’, but these two models have the same mistakes in that the models don't accept the mutual relationship. Now we have the only ‘model of difference’ that regard a variety of cultural differences as they are in itself, we can reach at the understanding of cultural differences through this model. This model doesn't ignore cultural differences and doesn't reduce the otherness of the other cultures to the universaliy of culture, so we can interpret a variety of cultures and accept the differences as they are. There is a overlap(Überlappung) between the cultures, in this overlap we can find the possibility of intercultural interpretation. Because only in the overlap between the cultures, the possibility of interpretation will be held. The overlap between different cultures can make cultural differences niether as equality, nor as difference, only as analog. This analogical concept allows the analogical interpretation. The concepts Overlap and analog are two types of cultures that have essential difference. But we can reveal a similarity through these concepts, as a concrete example in the context of culture and tradition. For example, Indian logic and Western logic are two different types of logic, but these are still logic, because these logics attempt to provide grounds for the acquisition of new knowledge. However, There is a difference in the methods of two logics, Indian logic generally use inductive reasoning based on empirical cases, and Western logic deductive reasoning based on the formal validity. In this point, the perspective of intercultural philosophy don't judge the other cultures to be the lack of universality and validity on the ground of centralism. So intercultural understanding can recognize different cultures to be right, without denying the otherness, and lead us to a logic which will extend universal knowledges.

말의 상호문화철학의 기획은 ‘상호문화적 비교철학’ 내지 ‘상호문화적 해석학’으로 특징된다. 그는 해석학의 모델을 ‘동일성 모델’ ‘차이의 모델’ ‘유비적 모델’의 세 가지로 구분하고, 그 중에서 ‘유비적 모델’을 상호문화적 해석학에 적합한 모델로써 제시한다. ‘동일성 모델’은 자신의 전통을 보편타당한 기준으로 삼기 때문에 타문화에 대한 이해에서 타자의 고유성을 말살시키고 자기 이해를 확장하려고 한다. 반면 전적인 ‘차이의 모델’은 문화들 사이의 차이를 절대시하기 때문에 대화 가능한 출발점이 부재하게 된다. 다만 차이 모델에서는 타자가 타자로서 인정된다는 점에서는 ‘동일성 모델’보다 진일보한 측면이 있지만, 상호관계성이 인정되지 않는다는 점에서는 동일한 한계를 보인다. 오직 ‘유비적 모델’의 해석학만이 타자의 타자성이 무시되거나 환원되지 않고 이해에 도달하는 상호문화적 해석이 가능하다. 상호문화적 해석의 가능성은 문화들 사이의 중첩(겹침, Überlappung)에 있다. 겹침만이 해석을 허용하기 때문이다. 문화들 사이의 중첩개념은 전적인 차이도 전적인 동일성도 아닌 유비적 해석을 가능하게 하는 핵심 개념이다. 중첩 및 유비적 개념은 유적 개념의 차원에서는 근본적으로 다른 두 종류의 문화들이지만, 맥락적인 문화 전통의 구체적인 사례에서, 그리고 그 상위 개념을 통해서 유사성으로 드러난다. 가령 인도 논리학과 서양 논리학은 유적 개념으로서는 서로 다른 두 개의 논리학이지만, 새로운 지식 획득을 위한 추론과 논거를 제공하려 한다는 점에서, 따라서 논리학이라는 상위 개념에서 겹친다. 그러나 인도 논리학은 논거를 경험적 사례에 의거하는 귀납의 방식으로 추론하고, 서양 논리학은 형식적 타당성에 의거하는 연역적 방식으로 추론한다는 점에서 다르다. 여기서 상호문화철학의 관점은 어느 한편의 관점을 중심으로 하여 다른 편의 결여로 판단하거나 변형시키지 않는다. 상호문화적 이해는 타자성을 훼손하는 것이 아니라 남겨 둠으로써, 논리학이라는 보편적 인식의 확장으로 이끈다.
