It is necessary for us to give some proper explanation about why people relinquish their will to live and commit suicides in order to prevent the suicidal epidemics that has been prevalent in our society and to cure the pain caused by it. In this paper, I shall carry out two works. First, I shall contend that the proper type of explanation for human actions including suicidal is not the causal explanation used in empirical science and psychology, but the teleological explanation. Second, I shall examine Freud’s psychoanalysis as a typical example of the former, and Frankl’s logotherapy and my teleological counseling as typical examples for the latter. Going through those works, it will turned out that theory of psychoanalysis has a fundamental limit, for it presuppose some causes of suicide by which it tries to give causal explanation such that it disregards reason, meaning, telos that trigger human actions, and that theories of logotherapy and teleological counseling are beyond the limit of psychoanalysis and furnish the proper explanation to suicidal action.

현대 사회에 만연된 ‘자살 전염병’을 예방하고 그로 인한 고통을 치유하려면 사람들이 살고자 하는 의지를 버리고 자살을 시도하는 이유를 해명해야 한다. 나는 이 글에서 두 가지 작업을 진행할 것이다. 첫째, 자살을 포함한 인간의 행위를 설명하기 위한 적절한 설명 유형은 과학이나 심리학에서 주로 사용되는 인과적 설명이 아니라 목적론적 설명이라는 점을 주장할 것이다. 둘째, 전자의 예로서 프로이트(Freud)의 정신분석을 검토하고, 후자의 예로서 빅터 프랑클(Frankl)의 로고테라피와 나의 목적 지향적 철학상담을 비교할 것이다. 이런 작업을 통하여 정신분석 이론은 자살의 원인을 가정하고 그것에 의존하여 자살을 인과적으로 설명하기 때문에 행위를 유발하는 이유, 의미, 목적을 도외시한다는 점에서 근본적 한계를 갖는다는 점과 로고테라피 이론과 목적 지향적 이론은 정신분석 이론의 이런 한계를 넘어서 자살에 대한 가장 적합한 설명을 제공한다는 점이 주장된다.
