It is commonly believed that the temporal order, the causal relation, and the ethical responsibility between two events have the same direction. I shall challenge this common belief. I ask this question. Is it possible that we have an ethical responsibility in the reverse temporal order? If it is, is it because backward causation is possible? In order to discuss ethical responsibilities in the context of the temporal order we need to consider ‘diachronic responsibility'. I shall argue that diachronic responsibility has two directions and that the strong version of backward causation is not required for two directions of diachronic responsibility.

시간의 선후 관계, 인과 관계, 윤리적 책임 관계는 동일한 한 가지 방향을 갖는 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 필자는 이 일반적인 믿음에 의문을 제기한다. 우리의 물음은 이것이다. 윤리적 책임 관계가 시간의 선후 관계에 역행할 수 있는가? 있다면, 이는 역행 인과가 가능하기 때문인가? 윤리적 책임을 시간의 흐름 속에서 논의한다는 것은 통시적 이해를 요구하므로, 우리가 다루고자 하는 윤리적 책임 관계를 ‘통시적 책임’이라고 부를 수 있다. 필자는 이 논문에서 통시적 책임이 두 방향으로 성립할 수 있으며, 이를 위해서 강한 형태의 역행 인과가 요구되는 것은 아니라고 논증할 것이다.
