Why have people been so excited about technology? According to Albert Borgmann, it is due to the promise of technology for a happy life. This leads to the idea that the discourse of philosophy of technology should begin with the promise of modern technology rather than its nature or characteristics. The interest in the latter is based on the former. This paper examines Borgmann’s analysis of modern technology and his original idea for solving the problem of technology by reviewing his Technology and the Character of Contemporary Life. On the one hand, he inherits Heidegger’s philosophy of technology by introducing concepts such as focal things and practices, and devise paradigm. On the other hand, he tries to overcome Heidegger by promoting the reform of technology that redeems the promise of technology and democracy. The significance of Borgmann’s philosophy lies not only in its initiation of further discourse concerning the concrete solutions for the problem of technological society, but also in the suggestion that philosophy of technology should deal with the issue of “good life.” The desire for technological innovation should lead people to the debate on what good life is. We should compete with one another for what kind world we want to live in, rather than technological progress per se.

왜 사람들은 기술에 열광해 왔는가? 알버트 보르그만(Albert Borgmann)은 그 이유를 기술이 약속했던 행복한 삶에서 찾아야 한다고 주장한다. 따라서 기술철학은 현대기술의 본질이나 특징보다는 기술에 대한 근대의 기대, 혹은 기술의 약속으로부터 시작해야 한다. 기술의 본질에 관심을 기울이게 된 계기가 바로 현대기술에 대한 기대가 커진 상황이기 때문이다. 본 논문은 보르그만의 주저인 『기술과 우리 시대 삶의 특징』 을 중심으로 그의 문제의식과 분석, 그리고 기술사회의 문제를 극복하기 위한 독창적인 제안을 살펴본다. 보르그만은 초점사물, 초점행위, 장치의 패러다임과 같은 개념을 통해 하이데거의 기술철학을 계승하면서도 기술의 약속과 민주주의를 새롭게 하는 기술의 개혁을 주창하여 하이데거를 넘어서려 노력한다. 보르그만의 사상의 중요성은 기술사회의 문제를 극복할 구체적인 대안을 제시하여 논의를 촉발한 것에서도 찾을 수 있지만, 그보다는 ‘좋은 삶’의 문제를 기술철학의 영역으로 끌어들인 데 있다. 기술발전에 대한 사람들의 열망은 좋은 삶이 어떤 것인지에 대한 토론으로 이어져야 한다. 기술발전 자체를 경쟁의 대상으로 삼을 것이 아니라, 그 발전을 통해 어떤 세상에서 살게 될 것인지를 놓고 토론하며 경쟁해야 한다.
