The purpose of this paper is to discuss the meanings of ‘-e-’ type intransitive verbs and ‘-ar-’ type intransitive verbs and to clarify the problems in Kageyama(1996) and to redescribe the meanings of the two types. This paper also argues that, through the analysis of the timing of individual verb’s derivation and their meanings, it is possible to notice the semantic tendency of the derivation of the two types. ‘-E-’ type intransitive verbs denote the externally caused events that can take place without volitional agent and, there are many ‘-ar-’ type intransitive verbs that denote the events that presuppose the existence of agent. There have been many ‘-e-’ type intransitive verbs from ancient times, which mainly denote unvolitional events, and such a tendency has been reflected in subsequent derivation as well. ‘-E-’ types have taken up unvolitional events and consequently, ‘-ar-’ types have taken up the events that presuppose the existence of agent.

본고에서는 타동사에서 파생한 일본어의 [-e-]형 자동사와 [-ar-]형 자동사의 형태와 의미 간의 상관 관계에 대하여 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하여 두 형태에 대한 影山(1996)에서의 분 석의 문제점을 밝히고, [-e-]형 자동사와 [-ar-]형 자동사의 의미를 새로이 기술하고자 하였다. 또한 개별 동사의 파생 시기 및 의미를 분석함으로써 두 형태의 파생에 있어서 의미적인 경 향성을 찾아볼 수 있음을 논하였다. [-e-]형 자동사는 기본적으로는 외적 원인에 의한 것이지만 의지적인 동작주 없이도 일어 날 수 있는 사건을 나타내며, [-ar-]형 자동사는 동작주의 존재를 전제로 하는 사건을 나타내 는 동사가 많다. 상대(上代)부터 주로 비의지적인 사건을 나타내는 동사가 많았던 [-e-]형 자 동사의 경향성은 그 후의 자동사 파생에도 반영되었다. 비의지적인 사건을 주로 [-e-]형 자 동사가 담당하게 됨에 따라, 동작주의 존재를 전제로 하는 사건은 [-ar-]형 자동사가 담당하 게 되었다.
