This study aims to categorise adult learning theories and to suggest future research agendas. This paper proposed eight categories of adult learning theories. They were instrumental learning theories, humanistic theories, transformative learning theory, social theories of learning, motivational models, reflective models, constructivism, and postmodernism & post-structuralism. In doing this, three trends in the existing adult learning theories were identified: Firstly, the main approach of the existing adult learning theories has moved from psychology to sociology; Secondlly, most of the existing adult learning theories were developed by foreign scholars; Thirdly, adult learning theories primarily took humanistic and constructive viewpoints. The future research agendas suggested in this article are as follows: More interdisciplinary approaches are required for the development of adult learning theories; We need more robust research methodology and analytical tools to explore the underlying mechanisms and processes of adult learning phenomena. For this, more empirical studies on emergent social relationships and adult learning processes are to be conducted; Last but not least, the issues of ontology and epistemology are to be discussed in adult learning theories.

본 연구는 지금까지 논의되어 온 성인학습이론을 체계적으로 범주화하여 그 의의 및 한계를 논하고, 이를 바탕으로 성인학습이론의 발전을 위한 향후 연구과제를 제시하는 데 있다. 본 연구에서는 성인학습이론을 크게 8가지로 범주화하였다. 이는 도구적 학습 이론, 인본주의이론, 전환학습이론, 사회적 학습이론, 동기 모형, 성찰 모형, 구성주의, 포스트모더니즘과 후기구조이론이다. 분석 결과, 기존의 성인학습이론은 세 가지 특성을 보였다. 첫째, 성인학습이론은 전반적으로 심리학에서 사회학적 접근방식으로 이동해 왔 다. 둘째, 성인학습이론은 외국학자들이 개발한 이론에 주로 의지하고 있다. 셋째, 성인 학습이론은 주로 인본주의적, 구성주의적 입장을 취한다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 본 연 구는 향후 성인학습이론을 개발하는 데 있어 사회학, 심리학, 철학과 같은 다양한 이론적 접근 방식들이 통합되어야 할 것을 주장했다. 또한 학습을 구성하는 여러 요소들이 어떻 게, 왜 그러한 방식으로 작동하는 지에 대한 인과기제와 과정을 설명해 줄 수 있는 보다 강력한 성인학습 연구방법론과 분석도구의 개발도 시급히 요청된다. 이를 위해서는 관계의 창출과 학습 과정에 대한 경험적 연구를 활성화해야 한다. 하지만 무엇보다도 이론이 성립 하기 위해서 근원적으로 논의되어야 하는, 실재(reality)와 인식의 문제를 다루는 존재론과 인식론의 문제를 성인학습이론에서 심도 있게 다루어 나가기 시작해야 한다.
