“Creatio ex nihilo” Faith is one of the core doctrines of Christianity. This is a faith universally applied to Jews and Muslims. My goal in this paper is to trace back to the concept of nihil(nothing) in the history of Muslim philosophy based upon Muslim theology. Originally, the concept of nothing begins with the concept of non-existence in Greek philosophy. The concept of non-existent can mean 'nothing' as a vacuum or 'idea' or 'pure material' as a preexisting eternal material. This conception was brought into the Muslim world by Jewish philosophers and Christian philosophers in Syria, so before the Greek writings were translated into Arabic, there were already various discussions of the concept of nothingness. The mutakalimun (Muslim theologian), who tried to redefine Muslim theology through Greek philosophy, attempts an eclectic interpretation. They do not abandon the traditional belief in ‘creation from nothing’ in order to preserve God's uniqueness, but at the same time expand the concept of nothing by maintaining the notion of nonexistence as the preexisting eternal material of Platonism. For this reason, rather than using the direct expression of “creating from nothing,” they uses the new expression of “creation not from something.” I want to explore why and how such discussions take place around important classics of Muslim philosophy.

무로부터의 창조(creatio ex nihilo) 신앙은 기독교의 핵심 교리중의 하나이다. 이는 유대인들과 무슬림들에게 보편적으로 적용되는 신앙이다. 이 논문은 AD. 8-9세기에 무로부터의 창조 신학이 어떻게 무슬림 신학으로 수용되는지에 관한 수용사적 관점에서 무 개념을 추적하고 있다. 원래 ‘무’ 개념은 그리스 철학의 ‘비존재자’라는 개념에서 출발한다. 비존재자라는 개념은 진공상태로서 ‘무’를 의미할 수도 있고 선재하는 영원한 질료로서 ‘이데아’나 ‘순수질료’를 의미할 수도 있다. 이 무개념은 시리아에 있는 유대인 철학자들과 기독교 철학자들에 의해서 무슬림 세계로 유입되었기 때문에 그리스 철학 작품들이 아랍어로 번역되기 이전에도 이미 무 개념에 대한 다양한 논의들이 존재했었다. 그리스 철학을 통해서 무슬림 신학을 재정립하려고 노력했던 무타칼리문(무슬림 신학자)은 이 때문에 절충주의적 해석을 시도한다. 그들은 신의 유일성을 지키기 위해서 무로부터 창조라는 전통적인 창조신앙을 버리지 않으면서 동시에 비존재자라는 개념이 플라톤주의의 선재하는 영원한 질료라는 개념을 유지함으로서 무의 개념을 확장시키고 있다. 이 때문에 직접적으로 ‘무로부터’ 창조라는 직접적인 표현을 쓰지 않고 ‘무언가가 아닌 것으로’ 창조라는 새로운 표현법을 사용하고 있다. 연구자는 왜 그리고 어떤 방식으로 그런 논의가 진행되는지를 무슬림 신학의 중요한 고전들을 중심으로 탐색하고자 한다.
