This paper will explore how the philosophies of Xun Zi were evaluated and received in the field of Neo-Confucianism, particularly by Zhu Xi. Inspired by the writings of Han Yu, a Chinese writer during the Tang Dynasty, the theoretical branch of Daotong, which championed the philosophies of Confucius and Mencius, became the mainstream Confucian philosophy. As a result, the philosophies of Xunzi faded into the mists of history. According to Zhu Xi’s assessment of Xunzi’s philosophy recorded in the ancient Zhuziyulei text, he is more critical than complimentary of Xunzi. Zhu Xi’s criticisms primarily focus on the Theory of Human Nature and the Discourse on Heaven rather than the Theory of the Mind and Theory of Self-Cultivation. This author, however, believes that Xunzi, not Mencius, has a better grasp on the essence of all theories except the Theory of Human Nature and the Discourse on Heaven. Admittedly, there are certain limitations that hinder the exploration and examination of similarities between the philosophies of Xunzi and Zhu Xi - it is difficult to determine the superiority or inferiority between philosophies. This author also understands that an overall comparison/ analysis is difficult to execute. Nevertheless, this author will analyze how the philosophies of Xunzi have been evaluated and received in Neo-Confucianism to identify the reason as to why Zhu Zi rejected the philosophies of Xunzi, while accepting the teachings of Mencius. Moreover, this author will review philosophies by Xunzi that influenced the philosophies of Zhu Xi, and compare their inherent similarities and differences.

이 논문의 목적은 宋明理學에서 순자철학에 대한 평가와 수용을 주자를 중심으로 전개하려 함이다. 唐代의 한유로부터 宋明理學으로 이어지는 사상사적 흐름 중에 공자에서 맹자로 이어지는 도통설이 사상계의 일반적인 인식이 되었기 때문에 순자의 사상이 역사 속으로 숨었다. 『주자어류』에 수록된 순자철학에 대한 주자의 평가를 보면, 긍정보다는 비평이 주를 이루는데, 그 주요 내용은 심론과 공부론이 아니라 성론과 천론에 집중되어 있다. 그러나 필자는 성론과 천론을 제외한 다른 모든 사상의 맥은 맹자보다는 순자라고 생각한다. 순자와 주자 사상의 유사하다는 것을 파악하는데 일정 부분 한계가 있다는 것을 안다. 사상 형성의 우열을 따진다는 것은 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 또한 전면적인 비교 분석도 쉽지 않다는 것을 안다. 그러나 필자는 宋明理學에서 순자철학의 수용과 평가를 주자를 통해 분석하여 주자가 왜 순자를 거부하고 맹자의 정통을 인정하였는가를 살필 것이며, 주자사상에 영향을 미친 순자사상을 검토하여 이질성과 동질성을 찾을 것이다.
