This paper aims to clarify the logic of the principle and method of interpreting the guà obtained by doing shé-shī(揲蓍). The fallacy of the preceding views on this may be attributed to the inability to grasp the meaning ‘guàcí(卦辭)’ and ‘yáocí(爻辭)’ and the relative meaning of the two. Therefore, this paper clarifies their meanings and then approaches its principle and method from the facts gained from them. As a result, this paper argues that the following procedures and methods should be followed in order to interpret the guà obtained by doing shé-shī. First, since the guàs obtained by doing shé-shī are combinations of shàng-guà(上卦) and xià-guà(下卦), the fortuneteller draws an image in relation to each other or in the whole of the guà. So from this, the fortuneteller deduces the situation[時] to come. Second, because yáo(爻) has its own position in the guà, the fortuneteller draws an image in relation to the yáo in that position and the other huàs[劃]. So from this, the fortuneteller deduces the circumstances[位] that will lie in the situation. Third, since there is a dynamic relationship between the circumstances and the situation, the fortuneteller finally predicts the future by considering how both conditions are satisfied. And the fortuneteller should decide on action guidelines by supplementing the short circumstances.

이 논문은 설시(揲蓍)를 하여 얻는 괘를 어떠한 원리에 의해 어떻게 해석해야하는지, 즉 괘 해석의 원리 및 방법에 관한 논리를 밝히려고 한다. 그리고 이와 관련한 기존의 견해들이 가지는 오류는 괘사(卦辭)와 효사(爻辭)의 의미 및 그 관계적 의미를 제대로 파악하지 못한 데에 그 근본원인이 있을 수 있다. 따라서 이 본문은 이들의 의미를 명확히 하고 그럼으로써 가지게 되는 사실들을 기본전제로 하여 괘 해석의 원리 및 방법에 접근하고 있다. 결과적으로 이 논문은 설시를 하여 얻는 괘를 해석하기 위해서는 다음의 절차와 방법을 따라야 할 것을 주장한다. 먼저, 설시를 하여 얻는 괘는 상괘(上卦)와 하괘(下卦)의 조합이기 때문에, 상괘와 하괘 간의 관계상에서 형상을 유추하거나, 괘의 전체상에서 받는 인상을 가지고 형상을 유추한다. 그래서 이를 가지고 다가올 상황[時]을 예단한다. 둘째, 괘 속에서 효는 자신의 자리를 가지기 때문에, 이 자리를 기준으로 다른 획(劃)들과의 관계상에서 형상을 유추한다. 그래서 이를 가지고 그 상황 속에 놓이게 될 처지[位]를 예단한다. 셋째, 상황[時]과 처지[位] 간에는 역학관계(力學關係)가 성립하기 때문에 두 조건이 각기 만족하는 정도를 고려하여 앞일을 최종적으로 예단한다. 그리고 부족한 처지를 보완하는 관점에서 당위적 실천방향을 가름해야 한다.
