The main purpose of this paper is to discuss a characteristic of Dewey's naturalistic aesthetics. Experience, nature, and art are connected with each other complicatedly in the thought of Dewey. If a understanding for the naturalistic thought of Dewey is the only purpose, the work of necessity is just analysis of the relation between experience and nature. But if a understanding for the naturalistic aesthetics of Dewey is the purpose, we should unravel a complicated problem in art as well as experience and nature. This present the unconventional aspect of Dewey's naturalistic aesthetics. It is as in the following. In the first, Dewey investigates a continuity of experience and nature. According to Dewey, on the one hand nature is a objective base of experience, but on the other, nature implicates the interactive relationship with the subject. Furthermore, an experience has the same sense as that of art. This is because of aesthetic structure. Dewey said an experience that constructs through the aesthetic structure is an aesthetic experience or a work of art. And the aesthetic structure has come to a completion through series of process. What is crucially important is that the base of aesthetic structure is nature. And the subject of experience ultimately interacts with nature through the perception. And then the nature and the perceptional reaction of the subject form the abundant content of Dewey's naturalistic aesthetics. But this senses take on complex and profound aspects in Dewey's words, so to speak, rhythm, form, and perception. In other words, the naturalistic rhythm intrinsic in nature, the aesthetic rhythm reflected the perceptional reaction of the subject, and the perceptional form which determinately completes an experience through the possession of the rhythm are the distinct characteristics of Dewey's naturalistic aesthetics.

이 글은 듀이의 자연주의 미학이 갖는 특징을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 듀이의 사상에는 경험, 자연, 예술이라는 세 개념이 뒤얽혀 있다. 단순히 듀이의 자연주의 사상을 이해하는 것이 목적이라면 경험과 자연의 관계 분석으로도 충분하지만, 자연주의 미학을 이해하는 것이 목적이라면 경험과 자연뿐만 아니라 예술까지 뒤얽혀 있는 실타래를 풀어나가야 한다. 이는 듀이의 자연주의적 사상이 미학의 범위 내에서 색다른 면모를 갖춘다는 것을 뜻한다. 먼저 듀이는 경험과 자연의 관계를 연속성이 있는 것으로 규명한다. 듀이에 따르면 자연은 경험의 객관적 토대일 뿐만 아니라 주체와 상호작용하는 관계에 있다. 나아가 경험은 예술과 동일한 의미로 간주된다. 듀이가 두 개념의 공통점으로 보고 있는 것은 미적 구조이다. 듀이는 미적 구조를 갖춘 경험을 미적 경험이라고 하며, 이것은 예술 분야에서 보면 예술작품이라고 말해지는 것과 같다. 미적 구조는 하나하나의 경험 또는 예술작품 속에서 일련의 과정들을 통해 완결에 이르게 된다. 이때 미적 구조를 갖추는 데 있어 기본 토대가 되는 것은 자연적 배경이며 경험 주체는 지각을 통해 자연과 상호작용한다. 결국 듀이 자연주의 미학의 풍부한 내용은 자연과 주체의 지각작용 사이에서 만들어진다. 다시 말해 자연에 내재해 있는 자연적 리듬으로부터 주체의 지각작용이 반영된 미적 리듬 그리고 리듬의 보유를 통해 결정적으로 경험을 완성시키는 지각적 형식 등이 듀이 미학에서 볼 수 있는 자연주의적 특징이라고 할 수 있다.
