Both Aristotle and Kant adopt a teleological approach to virtue while they represent virtue ethics and deontology, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the features and normative implications of their approaches. For this I shall grasp the basic positions of Aristotle’s and Kant’s teleological approaches and examine how ends and the final good are understood in the processes of those approaches and what differences and similarities there are between them. Then I shall look into their normative implications, focusing on the foundations of value that determine the nature of the two approaches. Aristotle’s teleological approach to virtue is including deontological elements whereas Kant’s approach is based on deontology. The examination of this paper reveals that Aristotle and Kant take different stands on whether emotion is involved in setting ends and how virtue is related with the final good and external goods and that the incompatible difference results from the fact that each of the two sees perfection and autonomy as the foundations for determining the good of ends.

덕윤리를 대표하는 아리스토텔레스와 의무윤리를 대표하는 칸트 둘 모두의 덕개념에서 공통적으로 목적론적 접근이 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 아리스토텔레스와 칸트가 취하는 목적론적 덕접근을 검토하면서 두 접근의 성격과 규범윤리적 의미를 고찰한다. 먼저 아리스토텔레스와 칸트의 목적론적 덕접근의 기본 입장을 파악한 후, 두 목적론적 덕접근의 전개과정에서 목적과 최고선이 어떻게 이해되는지, 이러한 이해의 유사점과 차이는 무엇인지 고찰한다. 나아가서 아리스토텔레스와 칸트의 목적론적 덕접근의 성격을 규정하는 가치의 근거를 중심으로 두 접근이 규범윤리적 차원에서 가지는 의미를 살펴본다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 의무론적 요소를 포함하는 목적론적 덕접근을 취하는 아리스토텔레스와 의무론에 근거한 목적론적 덕접근을 취하는 칸트가 목적의 규정에서 감정의 관여 여부, 그리고 최고선과 덕의 관계, 외적인 선과 덕의 관계를 다르게 이해한다는 점을 밝히고, 이러한 차이는 그들이 목적의 선을 규정하는 근거를 각각 완전성과 자율로 보면서 서로 양립하기 어려운 규범윤리적 입장을 갖고 있기 때문임을 규명한다.
