The aim of this article is to propose answers to some of the central issues concerning the method of hypothesis in the Phaedo. In particular, I argue the following three theses. First, the fact that the initial hypothesis is the strongest proposition should not be interpreted either absolutely or ad hominem; it should be taken to be the strongest relative to the given subject of inquiry. Second, the person who demands explanation for the initial hypothesis should not be considered someone hostile to the hypothesis and to the one who has posited it; he is a collaborator in search for truth on the basis of the method of hypothesis and his questioning is intended to stimulate further inquiry. Third, the process of moving up for the best in the things above is not a process of looking for the absolute starting point for all possible inquiries, but still is a process of seeking objective truths and more fundamental understanding within the range of the given subject.

플라톤은 『파이돈』의 두 곳 － 100a3-7, 101d3-9 － 에서 가정의 방법 자체에 대한 설명을 제시하고 있는데, 이 두 대목 모두 많은 해석상의 쟁점들을 포함하고 있다. 이 글의 목표는 가정의 방법을 이해하는 데 가장 핵심이 되고 많은 논쟁의 대상이 되었던 쟁점들을 검토하고, 그것들에 대한 나름의 답을 제안하는 것이다. 이 글에서는 특히 다음과 같은 점들이 주장될 것이다. 첫째, 최초의 가정이 가지는 가장 강함의 성격은 절대적으로도 대인적(對人的)으로도 해석되어서는 안되며, 그때그때 탐구되는 주제에 따라 가변적인 의미에서의 가장 강함으로 이해되어야 한다. 둘째, 최초의 가정에 대해 설명을 요구하는 사람은 가정에 적대적인 사람이 아니라 가정의 방법을 수행하는 공동 연구자이며, 가정의 방법은 이러한 공동 탐구를 전제로 한다. 최초의 가정보다 상위에 있는 최선의 가정을 찾아가는 과정은 절대적 출발점을 지향하는 것은 아니지만, 여전히 주어진 주제의 범위 내에서 객관적이고 근원적인 지식을 찾아가는 탐구의 과정이다.
