Filial Piety of Confucius and Mencius is upgraded not only to ethical ought but also to the metaphysical principle. For Filial Piety is relevant to the fundamental principle of all things. The problem arises from simultaneously claiming the universality of being the fundamental principle of all things while at the same time having the speciality to love discerningly. In simple terms, it seems that love should not be discriminatory on a universal principle. However, Motzu’s General Love is strongly criticized as the faterlessness in the level of Confucianism. It is natural(所當然) for offspring to discriminate between their parents and the parents of others in a different way, and the reason(所以然) for that is the principle that must be so. In a sense it does not seem to be yet clarified whether discriminatory love can be a principle in itself. The primary purpose is to identify how Filial Piety is the Being and the Oughtness in the zhuxixue(朱子學). it is to examine how Filial Piety is Li(principle) by itself. it is to analyze whether Filial Piety is both Li(principle) and a discriminative meaning. On the one hand, this indirectly play a role in revealing the biologically identifying the aspects of parental and child relations in a sense and distinguishing them from LiYi(理一) as a Li(principle) dimension.

공맹의 효는 성리학에서 와서는 단순히 윤리적 당위에 그치는 것이 아니라 형이상적인 문제로 논의된다. 효는 만물의 근원적인 원리인 ‘리’와 무관하지 않기 때문이다. 그 문제란 효가 차별적으로 사랑한다는 특수성을 가지면서도 동시에 만물의 근원적 원리라는 보편성을 동시에 가진다는 주장에서 발생한다. 단순하게 생각해봤을 때, 보편적인 원리 차원에서 사랑은 차별적이면 안 될 것 같다. 그러나 묵자의 겸애사상은 유학의 차원에서 무부(無父)의 설이라고 강하게 비판 받는다. 자기 부모와 타인의 부모를 분별해서 차등적으로 사랑하는 것은 당연한 것(所當然)이고 그것의 이유는 바로 그렇게 될 수밖에 없는 원리(所以然)라는 것이다. 어떤 의미에서 분별적 사랑이 그 자체로 원리일 수 있는지 여전히 해명되지 않은 것처럼 보인다. 본 논문의 일차적 목적은 먼저 주자학에서 효가 어떻게 소이연이면서 소당연일 수 있는지에 확인하는 것이다. 주자학의 효 설명을 확인하여 최종적으로 효가 그 자체로 理일 수 있는지를 검토하는 것이다(理同). 그리고 효가 理이면서도 동시에 차별적 의미를 획득할 수 있는지 분석하는 것이다(理異). 이는 한편으로는 생물학적으로 부자라는 측면(氣同)이 어떤 의미에서 원리적 차원(理同)으로서의 리일(理一)과 구분되는지도 함께 밝히는 데에 간접적인 역할을 할 것이다.
