This paper interprets the theory of sublime as a logic of self- reservation, and focuses on the relationship between our mind and the sublime of nature, that brings fear or terror to us. The fear and power of nature brings us to feelings of fear, but at the same time, it triggers the action or movement of the mind that promotes or guides our self-preservation. In this connection, we seek to find the importance of the active activity of the mind in the sublime theory of Burke and Kant, and to derive the practical meaning and value of today with the aesthetics of sublime and self-preservation. In order to illustrate the above purpose, the first, this essay seeks a context in which Burke's theory of sublime is far more original than what is commonly known and influenced Kant's theory, Focusing on the logical development of sublime and self-preservation. Second, the author will analyze the fact that the logical plan of self-preservation in Burke's theory of sublime is found in Kant's theory and developed into another dimension. Third, the writer will describe the practical significance of sublime and the logic of self-preservation as having alternative values that overcome the risks of self-preservation, which are sometimes inflicted on modern individuals who are vulnerable to suffering.

본 연구는 숭고의 이론(숭고론)을 자기보존의 논리로 해석하면서, 우리에게 공포나 두려움을 불러일으키는 자연의 숭고한 것과 우리의 마음의 관계에 주목한다. 자연의 무시무시한 것이나 위력을 지닌 것은 우리에게 공포나 두려움의 감정을 불러일으키지만, 동시에 그것은 우리의 자기보존을 고양시키거나 도야시키는 마음의 작용 혹은 운동을 촉발시킨다. 이러한 관계에서 마음의 능동적 활동 능력의 중요성을 버크와 칸트의 숭고론에서 찾고, 아울러 숭고와 자기보존의 논리가 지니는 오늘날의 실천적 의미와 가치를 도출하고자 한다. 위의 목적을 서술하기 위해, 우선, 본 논고는 버크의 숭고론의 독창성과 칸트의 미학에 영향을 미친 맥락을 숭고와 자기보존의 논리 전개를 중심으로 밝힌다. 다음, 버크의 숭고론에 담긴 자기보존의 미학적 기획이 칸트의 숭고론에도 연결되며,아울러 다른 차원으로 질적 전환이 이루어진다는 점을 텍스트를 중심으로 고찰할 것이다. 그리고, 버크와 칸트의 숭고론에서 발견되는 숭고와 자기보존의 미학이 오늘날 고통에 취약한 현대의 개인들이 때때로 내몰리는 자기보존의 위험을 극복할 수 있는 실천적 의미와 대안적 가치를 지니고 있음을 서술할 것이다.
