초록

영어

Chowondamro is a commentary of Lao-tzu written by Chowon Choong-ik Lee, who was a Ganghwa scholar in Joseon Dynasty period. Chowondamro has differentiation compared to other four commentaries written in Joseon Dynasty period. Chowondamro focused on the perspective of Lao-tzu while other commentaries interpreted it in Confucian perspective. This is apparent in Choong-ik Lee’s interpretation of the concept of ‘chang(常)’. In fact, Lao-tzu gave a special meaning to the word, ‘chang(常)’. Lao-tzu placed unique concepts into his work while combining ‘chang(常)’with other words, such as path to chang(常), changyou(常有), changwu(常無), changdao(常道), changxin(常心). There are three main interpretations of ‘chang(常)’ by Lao-tzu. First, Lao-tzu interpreted ‘chang(常)’ in terms of ‘invariability’ and ‘permanence’, which is an opposite concept to ‘change’. Second, ‘chang(常)’ can be interpreted as ‘a principle that does not change in the midst of changing’. In this case, composure is understood as consistency, in which all things have a property to change, yet such property does not change and remains that way. Third, ‘chang(常)’ is interpreted as an integration of ‘changeability’ and ‘unchangeability’. ‘Chang(常)’ is understood as whole convergence of ‘changeability’ and ‘unchangeability’. Lao-tzu’s interpretation of composure goes beyond the general meaning of consistency, invariability, and permanence. We can confirm that it is used as meaning of unchangeability of changing itself up to of whole convergence of ‘changeability’ and ‘unchangeability’. Choong-ik Lee expanded Lao-tzu’s concept of composure and applied it to Lao-tzu’s interpretation. In Chowondamro ‘chang(常)’, along with permanence of change, is expanded to dichotomous conflict of this and that, and whole convergence of ‘changeability’ and ‘unchangeability’. Also, Lee tried to provide his own interpretation of Lao-tzu by creating integrated concepts changyou(常有), changwu(常無), changdao(常道), changxin(常心). In Chowondamro, the expanded interpretation of the concept of ‘chang(常)’ is thought to be as a product of effort in reading Lao-tzu as he is. Choong-ik Lee’s understanding of the concept of ‘chang(常)’ shows his aspect of openness and mutual reply in his ideology. Therefore, there is a high possibility of misunderstanding Lee’s interpretation of Lao-tzu’s essence, if the concept of ‘chang(常)’ is poorly dealt with.
