This study explored the structure of inter-firm transaction networks in Gyeonggi-province and analyzed the impact of the average transaction distance on firm performance. First, it is shown that 60% of the turnover of firms in Gyeonggi-province is originated from the demand of firms in Seoul, so the economic activity of firms in Gyeonggi-province is susceptible to the economic downturn of Seoul. Second, the shorter the average transaction distance, the higher the profit of a firm tend to be, all other things being equal. However, the link between the average transaction distance and a firm’s profit is not significant among firms located in industrial cluster, implying that the reduction of the average transaction distance generates positive externality associated with the knowledge diffusion as well as the saving of transaction cost. In particular, the average transaction distance significantly impact on a firm’s profit, suggesting that the decrease in the average transaction distance is crucial among sectors with high reliance on knowledge and information.

본 연구는 경기도 기업의 거래 네트워크 자료를 구축해 거래 흐름의 지역 분포 특성을 파악하고, 기업의 평균 거래 거리가 운영성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 첫째, 경기도 기업은 이입보다 이출 규모가 더 크며, 역외 판매 수입의 60% 가량이 서 울 소재 기업과의 거래를 그 원천으로 하고 있어 서울 지역의 경기 및 수요 변동에 따라 경기도 기업의 생산활동이 민감하게 반응할 수 있다. 둘째, 다른 조건이 동일할 때 평균 거래 거리가 짧은 기업일수록 영업이익이 높은 경향 을 보인다. 다만 기업 간 평균 거래 거리의 감소는 산업단지 비 입주 기업에서만 영업이 익에 긍정적으로 작용하므로, 기업 간 거래 거리의 단축이 물리적 거래비용 감소뿐 아니 라 인접 기업과의 상호작용을 통한 지식과 정보의 이전 등 집적의 외부경제에 상응하는 효과를 유발하는 것으로 해석된다. 특히 전문·과학·기술서비스업 종사 기업 집단에서 평 균 거래 거리가 영업이익과 밀접한 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타나 지식과 정보가 생산의 주 요 원천이 되는 업종일수록 거래기업과의 거리 단축이 중요함을 시사한다.
