The purpose of this study is to investigate the JeongJo’s reading career in the Jugang (晝講) of Joseon Dynasty. To analyze rhe contenrs of the Silrog (the book which records the history of Korea) and the Seungjeongwonilgi (承政院日記), it knew the reading materials, a reading act and attitude which he read in the Crown prince time. Major findings are as the follows; The reading materials that he read in the Jugang were 5 titles, that is, Chunchujipjeon (春秋集傳), Noneo (論語), Maengja (孟子), Jungyong (中庸), Daehag (大學) etc, and the king Jeongjo read these books from the entronement year (1776) to the 24th year (1800) of Jeongjo’s reign. The number of times that he participated to the Jugang’s reading discussion was 246. He was the king who disliked reading in the Jugang from 1776 to 1800, when he was in power, moreover he was not almost presented at the reading discussion of the Jugang to the end of seizure of power. As a result, JeongJo’s reading career in the Jugang was much lower than the King’s reading career in past.

본 연구에서는 조선조 22대 왕 正祖의 讀書歷을 살펴보기 위하여 『조선왕조실록』과 『승정원일기』를 통해 재위 25년 동안 晝講에서의 독서일정을 파악하여 그의 독서력을 밝혔다. 정조는 1776년 25세에 즉위하면서 경연제도를 재정비하고 주강을 실시하였으나 14년(1790)에 중단하였다. 게다가 13년(1789) 2회, 14년에는 1회 밖에 실시하지 않았으며, 그 이후로 거의 주강에서는 독서하지 않았다. 정조가 주강에서 읽었던 책은 『春秋集傳』ㆍ『論語』ㆍ『孟子』ㆍ『中庸』ㆍ『大學』 등 5종이다. 독서토론 참여 회수는 즉위년부터 14년과 21년(1797) 1회까지 246회로 조사되었다. 이는 연 평균 9.8회로 아주 낮은 수치를 보여주고 있다. 따라서 정조의 주강에서의 독서력은 아주 저조함으로 나타났다.
