This study aimed to examine whether the social bond (control) theory is gender-neutral in explaining Korean juveniles’ delinquency. For this, it was first tested if the social bond model has the same explanatory power for both boys’ and girls’ delinquency. The next step was to examine if each social bond element has different effect on delinquent behaviors depending on gender. Out of the panel data of fourth graders who had been followed for seven years by the National Youth Policy Institute (i.e., Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010, KCYPS 2010), the fourth- and sixth-wave data were fitted into a negative binomial regression model. The likelihood ratio chi-square and the interval ratio of confidence intervals suggested that the model for boys has stronger explanatory power than that for girls. The effect of each social bond element on delinquency was somewhat different in its direction and magnitude depending on sex. However, all the differences were not statistically significant except for ‘participation’, It appeared to be reasonable to say that the social bond theory is not gender-neutral in Korean society, but rather better explaining boys’ misbehavior. However, any solid conclusion required more empirical and systematic studies for diverse samples. In particular, an efficient model for girls’ serious delinquency and longitudinal design remained to be applied.

본 연구는 사회유대이론이 우리사회에서 과연 성 중립적인지 검증하고자 했다. 이를 위해 먼저 사회유대모형이 성별에 따라 청소년 비행에 상이한 설명력을 갖는지 살펴보 고, 이어서 각 사회유대 요소가 성별에 따라 비행에 상이한 영향을 미치는지 확인하였 다. ‘한국아동·청소년패널조사 2010(KCYPS 2010)’의 초등학교 4학년 패널자료 중 4차 년도와 6차년도 자료를 통합하여 음이항회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 우도비 카이제곱과 신뢰구간의 구간비율에서 남학생 모형이 여학생 모형보다 우수한 것으로 드러났다. 각 사회유대 요소가 비행에 미치는 영향은 방향과 유의성에서 성별 차이를 보였지만, 실제 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 참여에서만 드러났다. 이상을 종합하면 사회유대이론은 우 리사회에서 성 중립적이지 않고 남자 청소년의 비행을 더 잘 설명한다고 볼 수 있었다. 하지만, 이러한 실증 연구가 국내에서는 아직 초기 단계이므로 성급한 결론을 내리기보 다는 향후 더욱 다양한 표본을 대상으로 체계적인 분석이 이루어질 필요가 있었다. 특 히 여학생의 중비행에 대한 유효한 모형 설정과 종단 설계가 필요한 과제로 남았다.
