This author in this paper identified characteristics of sports festivals held from 1895 to 1897 by Eul‒mi‒ui‒suk, Public Primary School, Kyungsung School and Royal Foreign Language School. In addition, this author also examined correlations between the sports festivals held around this time and imperialist countries. It was highly probable that the Great Sports Festival held by Eul‒mi‒ui‒suk in May 1895, was planned and operated in the Japanese way with the intention of aggression on education by principals and teachers who experienced culture of sports festivals of Japan, started under the name of "Kyeongtuyuhi" since 1874. However, like that of Japan, only imperialistic or militaristic characteristics cannot be given to this sports festival. The reason is that it was introduced from Japan, planned and operated by Japanese but it was attributed to complex nature of Kabo Reform Movement that independent efforts of the government's moderate enlightenment party existed. However, thereafter, the sports festivals held at Public Primary School, Kyungsung School and Royal Foreign Language School showed transplantation of typical Japanese and western sports festival cultures such as singing a national anthem, flag raising, hurrah repeat and reading of a speech, which was due to careful strategy that the imperialistic colors of great powers are overlaid on appearance of 'supporting the education reform of Joseon'.

본 연구의 목적은 문헌분석방법을 사용하여 을미의숙, 관립소학교, 경성학당, 관립외국어학교 등에서 개최한 운 동회의 성격을 규명하고자 하였다. 1895년 5월에 개최된 을미의숙 대운동회는 1874년부터 ‘경투유희’라는 이름으로 시작된 일본의 운동회 문화를 경험한 교장 및 교사들이 교육 침략적 의도를 갖고 자국의 방식으로 기획하고 운영했을 가능성이 매우 높은 것이었다. 그러나 이 운동회에는 일본의 그것처럼 제국주의 또는 군국주의적 성격만을 부여할 수는 없다. 그것은 일본으로부터 유입되었고, 일본인이 기획․운영하였으나, 조선 정부 온건개화파들의 주체적 노력이 공존했기 때문이다. 그러나 이후에 전개된 관립소학교, 경성학당, 관립외국어학교 등의 운동회에서는 애국가 제창, 국기 게양, 만세 복창, 연설문 낭독 등의 전형적인 일본 및 서구의 운동회 문화가 이식되는 양상을 보였는데, 이것은 ‘조선의 교육개혁 지원’ 을 표방한 제국주의적 팽창의 결과였다.
