This paper discusses the passages of 949-1112 in Aristophanes’ play, Clouds, contains arguments between two personified theories; one is reasonable and the other is incorrect theory, standing for sophistry. The comic debate in these passages was developed with the aspects of sophist education which was at the center of educational reality in the 5th century B.C. The debate was divided into arguments for reasonable theory, the arguments for incorrect theory, and the scenes of the entrance to the sophistry school. Clouds is a humorous portrayal of a social change in the values of knowledge. The consideration of the aspects of Athens education contained in Clouds seeks the destructive effects of sophist education on traditional values through the example of a family. The sophist debate in the passages of 949-112 sharply contrasts the social views of Athenian educational enthusiasm at that time. Through the debate between the two arguments the reasonable theory which had been known as Athenian best intelligence ends with the collapse against the sophistry. This comic device provides an opportunity for the audience to understand and shed new light on the wrong situation of education in the Athens community which lacks the core value of education.

본고는 의인화된 논리로써 올바른 논리의 상징 정론과 궤변의 상징 사론의 논쟁이 담긴 아리스토파네스 의 『구름』 949-1112 구절에 대한 논의이다. 이 구절에서 전개한 희극적 논쟁은 기원전 5세기의 교육적 현실 중심에 있는 소피스트 교육의 양상을 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 논쟁의 핵심은 정론의 변론, 사 론의 변론, 사색장 입학 장면으로 나누어 진행하였다. 『구름』은 지식의 가치관에 대한 사회의식 변화를 해학적으로 묘사한 작품이다. 『구름』이 담고 있는 아테네 교육의 양상 고찰은 한 가족의 사례를 통해 소 피스트적 교육이 전통적인 가치에 끼친 파괴적인 영향을 모색하는 것이다. 『구름』 949-1112에 나오는 소 피스트 논쟁은 당시 아테네의 교육열에 대한 사회적 견해를 첨예하게 대비시킨다. 정론과 사론의 논쟁 을 통해 아테네 최고의 지성으로 알았던 정론이 궤변 앞에 무너지는 것으로 막을 내린다. 이 같은 희극적 장치는 교육의 중심 가치가 부재한 아테네 공동체의 잘못된 교육의 위치를 관객들 스스로 이해하고 새 롭게 조명하는 기회를 제공한다.
