The main purpose of this study is to understand the geographical, historical and cultural background of the Ndebele tribe in Africa, to identify the kinds of Folk Costume, to analyze the characteristics of beadworks, patterns and colors appearing in Folk Costume, and to produce scarf pattern design applied to them. The contents and methods of this study are, first, to consider the geography, historical background and cultural characteristics of the Ndebele tribe through professional books, overseas papers and Internet materials. The second is to look at the types and design characteristics of the folk costume of the Ndebele tribe. The design characteristics are analyzed by classifying them into beadworks, patterns and colors. On the basis of theoretical consideration, the third is to develop scarf pattern design that reflects the characteristics of Ndebele folk costume. According to the analyzed characteristics, the method of development of scarf pattern design is divided into three and a total of 10 works are made. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the tradition of Ndebele folk costume has been continued around women's clothes, and the types and composition of clothes are different according to the social position of women. Second, the beadwork of Ndebele folk costume is an art form that shows the identity of the tribes, and the tradition is inherited from mother to daughter, and its decorativeness was a means of confirming the stage of women's lives. Third, it can be seen that Ndebele's folk costume consisted mainly of geometric patterns and simplified patterns of modern culture were also utilized. In addition, it was confirmed that the various configurations of left and right, rotation, and transformation symmetry were shown in the design unit rather than in the color symmetry. Fourth, it was found that the color of the folk costume of Ndebele was white and blue as the main color, and attracted the visual attention of the geometrical form with the color scheme of various primary colors. Finally, pattern design, which applied the characteristics of the folk costume of Ndebele, applied the geometric surface image of bead craft, expressed the wearing image of the costume in an abstract way, and changed the basic shape of geometry repeatedly to create a new geometric pattern design.

본 연구는 아프리카 은데벨레 부족의 지리적, 역사, 문화적 배경을 이해하고, 민족 복식에서 나타나는 구 슬 공예, 문양, 컬러의 특성을 파악하여 이를 응용한 스카프 패턴디자인을 제작하는 것을 주된 목적으로 한 다. 본 연구의 내용과 방법은 첫째, 전문 서적, 해외논문, 인터넷 자료 등을 통하여 은데벨레 부족의 지리, 역사적 배경과 문화적 특성에 대해 고찰한다. 둘째, 은데벨레 부족의 민족 복식의 종류와 디자인 특성을 살펴 본다. 디자인 특성은 구슬 공예, 문양, 컬러로 분류하여 분석한다. 셋째, 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 은데벨레 민족 복식의 특성을 반영한 스카프 패턴디자인을 개발한다. 분석한 특성에 따라 스카프 패턴디자인의 전개 방법을 3가지로 나누고 총 10점의 작품을 만든다. 이 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 은데벨레 민족 복식은 여성복을 중심으로 그 전통이 이어져 오고 있으며 여성의 사회적 위치에 따라 의상의 종류와 구성이 다름을 확인하였다. 둘째, 은데벨레 민족 복식의 구슬 공예는 종족의 정체성을 보여주는 예술형식으로 어머니에서 딸로 전통이 계승되며 그 장식성은 여성의 삶의 단계를 확인시켜주는 수단이었다. 셋째, 은데벨레 민족 복식 은 기하학무늬가 주를 이루며 현대 문물을 단순화하여 패턴으로 활용하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 대칭성의 특징을 보이며 컬러의 대칭보다는 디자인 단위에서 좌우, 회전, 변환 대칭의 다양한 구성을 보임을 확인하였 다. 넷째, 은데벨레 민족 복식의 컬러는 화이트와 블루를 주조색으로 하고 다양한 원색의 색상배색으로 기하 학 형태의 시각적 주목성을 높였음을 파악하였다. 마지막으로 은데벨레 민족 복식의 특성을 응용한 패턴디자 인은 구슬 공예의 기하학적 표면 이미지를 응용하고, 의상을 착용한 이미지를 추상적으로 표현하였으며, 기 하학의 기본형태를 변화, 반복하여 새로운 기하학 문양을 만들어 새로운 패턴디자인을 창조할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
