The purpose of this study is to understand how college students’ stereotypes toward sexual minorities are formed, and how those results affect their attitude toward LGBTQ. As a result, prejudice against LGBTQ was influenced by limited environment, universal values, and cultural diversity. The environment in which students could understand sexual minorities was very limited. Difficulty accessing information about LGBTQ created a distorted image of them and made have a passive attitude toward LGBTQ. In addition, students recognized that LGBTQ were different from themselves because they did not follow the universal values of society. This perception developed a negative attitude toward LGBTQ, combined with distorted images and passive attitudes formed in a limited environment. However, when students were exposed to cultural diversity, they have a more active attitude and tried to perceive LGBTQ positively. Also, when students perceived that LGBTQ were like themselves, they formed a positive attitude toward LGBTQ. This knowledge can be helpful as a reference for college administrators who are willing to develop successful cultural diversity on campus.

이 연구는 학생들의 성 소수자에 대한 인식이 어떻게 형성되는지, 그러한 결과가 성 소수자에 대한 태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 이해함에 목적이 있다. 자료수집을 위해 10명의 재학생들이 면담에 참여하였다. 연구결과, 제한된 환경, 사회 보편적 가치, 그리고 개방적 문화는 성 소수자에 대한 인식과 태도 형성에 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 학생들이 성 소수자를 이해할 수 있는 환경은 매우 제한적이었으며, 이들에 대한 정보획득의 한계는 성 소수자에 대한 왜곡된 이미지를 형성시키고 소극적인 태도를 갖게 했다. 그러나 학생들은 개방적인 문화에 노출되는 순간 좀 더 적극적인 태도와 함께 성 소수자를 긍정적으로 바라보고자 했으며, 사회 보편적 가치에 따라 자신들의 모습과 같다고 인식 할 때 성 소수자에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 보였다. 연구결과는 대학 문화의 다양성 발전을 위해 노력하는 대학 행정가들을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
