This study aims to analyze Daniel S. Gregory’s conjugal ethics through his great work Christian Ethics(1875). This text was translated into Korean by missionary William L. Swallen(蘇安論) during the early years of Korean Christianity and was published by Joseon Yesugyo Jangrohoe(朝鮮耶蘇敎長老會) in 1915. Gregory’s significant emphasis of conjugal ethics is based on his Christian Ethics and this book fills us in on a lot of the early Christian ethics in that era. His conjugal ethics covered the whole spectrum about the arguments of marriage ethics, marriage based on triple law(God’s law, social law, national law), marital obligations, and so on. His conjugal ethics is based on the seventh chapter of 1Corinthians and the key points of Gregory’s conjugal ethics could be summarized as follows: Firstly, I tried to explain Gregory’s view of conjugal ethics such as sacred promise based on God’s law, true value of monogamy, permanence of couples’ life, and so forth. Secondly, I concentrated on significant points for Christian marriage based on triple system of the law such as God’s law, social law, national law. Thirdly, I treated with the important marital obligations and duties such as sincerity, love, help, dependence, care, guide, protection, household economy, family management, and so froth. In light of Gregory’s remarkable traces and meaningful achievements, I propose future extensions of this research into his other important books such as Why Four Gospels?, Practical Logic, and other related areas.

이 연구는 그레고리(Daniel S. Gregory)의 명저 『도덕학』(Christian Ethics)을 중심으로 부부윤리를 분석하려는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 문헌은 한국 기독교 전래 초기에 스왈런(William L. Swallen, 蘇安論) 선교사에 의해 한글로 번역되었고 1915년에 조선예수교장로회 출판으로 발행되었다. 그레고리의 부부윤리에 대한 심오한 주안점은 이 문헌을 통해 살펴볼 수 있으며 이 저서는 당대 초기 기독교인들의 윤리와 관련된 여러 논점들을 시사해준다. 그의 부부윤리는 혼인윤리, 삼중적 법 체제(하나님의 법, 사회법, 국가법)에 근거한 혼인, 혼인한 후 부부의 의무 논증 등에 대한 전반적인 내용을 포괄하고 있다. 그의 부부윤리는 고린도전서 7장에 기초를 두었으며 부부윤리에 나타난 핵심적인 논점들을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그레고리의 혼인윤리관과 관련하여 하나님의 법에 근거한 신성한 언약, 일부일처제의 참 가치, 종신(終身) 부부지도(夫婦之道) 등에 관하여 설명했다. 둘째, 그리스도인의 결혼과 관련된 의미심장한 논점들로서 하나님의 법, 사회법, 국가법 등 삼중적 법 제도에 기초한 결혼에 대하여 초점을 맞추었다. 셋째, 결혼하여 가정을 이룬 부부가 감당해야 할 중차대한 책임과 의무로서 진실함, 사랑, 돕고 의지함, 돌보아 줌, 인도와 보호, 가정 경제, 가정 경영 등에 대해 다루었다. 추후 그와 연관된 연구가 외연되어 이 주제 외에도 그의 다른 주요 저서들 『왜 4복음서인가?』, 『실천논리학』 등과 관련하여 다양한 방면의 연구로 확장되기를 바란다.
