초록

영어

The gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sculpture in the National Museum of Korea is one of the representative sculptures of the Goryeo Dynasty. It features colorful coronets, necklaces, and realistic and natural expressions. Tibetan Buddhist Bodhisattva statues have gradually spread to East Asia, including Goryeo, since the Mongols, the Yuan Dynasty, made Tibetan Buddhism a state religion. The gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sculpture exhibits a chubby face, a slender triangular face, a splendid storage and large round earrings, bracelets and anklets, and a narrow waist, which are completely different from the traditional Bodhisattva, which had a voluminous body and simple ornaments. This is a typical feature of the Tibetan Buddhist Bodhisattva of the Ming Dynasty in China. The coronets, earrings, necklaces, skirts, and body shapes of the Bodhisattva are not only Tibetan-style bodhisattva, but also a mixture of the various elements of the period shown in the traditional Bodhisattva images of Southern Song, Yuan and Ming. In China, traditional Bodhisattva and Tibetan Bodhisattva are both strongly characterized and rarely influenced by each other. In other words, The gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sculpture is a rather unusual example that reflects both traditional and Tibetan styles. The timing of the statue's production is not certain. There are three views, one view from the Goryeo Dynasty, the other view from the Joseon Dynasty, and the other view from the end of Goryeo to the beginning of Joseon Dynasty, but it is difficult to confirm because the related documents are not handed down and the stylistic characteristics of the various periods, traditional Buddhist styles, and Tibetan Buddhist styles coexist. Although timing can be estimated to some extent through analysis of each detail, it is possible to look at the trends based on existing artifacts, so it is open to reconsideration and may vary with the emergence of new artifacts.
