In order to examine the meaning of “the winding stair,” which is a symbolic process of approaching “the Unity of Being,” this paper is to focus on the deep reading of “A Dialogue of Self and Soul” in The Winding Stair and Other Poems published in 1933. Yeats didn’t personify the self and the soul even in the dialogue poem. We can be sure that Yeats tried to approach “The Unity of Being” through the winding stair, that is, a gyre in his poetic world.
