This paper aims to explore issue the archetype(jeonhyeong, 典型), a key element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Act based on dances protected as Korea’s national cultural heritage. Dance does not have standard notation system and dancer’s countless practices get specific style to inscribe he or her body. This natural expressiveness allows dance to have flexibility, and archetype does likewise denotatively. Especially the solo folk dances—seungmu, taepyeongmu, and salpurichum— have a character-driven style and improvisatory by nature, so flexibility is doomed to be emphasized compared to that of court or ritual dances. By contrast the intangible cultural heritage system was made based on the fixedness. While denotative movements can be encoded differently depending on and individual’s natural expressiveness, an intentional property of the dance—like internal bliss of seungmu, elegant relish of taepyeongmu and han of salpurichum—encapsulates the archetype. Therefore, in order to establish archetype norm, I suggest the following steps. First, the Cultural Heritage Administration provides the judges with the survey report and the necessary data at the time of the event recognition and holder recognition. Second, individual answers to the elements of archetype mentioned above should be gathered. Third, the judges should convene to discuss matters on which opinions clash in order to resolve differences.

본 연구는 무형문화재법에 명시된 전형의 방향성을 어디에 두어야 할지 국가무형문 화재 춤 종목 사례를 중심으로 탐구하는데 목적을 둔다. 춤은 표준 기보가 부재하고, 무수한 축적 훈련을 통해 일정한 스타일을 몸에 새긴다. 이런 자연적 표현성 때문에 춤이란 기본적으로 유동적이고 전형 또한 외연적으로 고정되기 어렵다. 특히 개인 민 속무인 승무, 태평무, 살풀이춤은 인물을 중심으로 유파가 형성되고 태생적으로 즉흥 성을 가지므로 궁중정재나 의식무에 비해 유동성이 강조된다. 반면 무형문화재 제도 는 고정성을 바탕으로 만들어졌다. 외연적 동작은 개인의 자연적 표현성에 따라 다르 게 부호화될 수 있지만, 살풀이춤의 한, 승무의 내적 희열, 태평무의 품격 있는 흥취 와 같은 그 춤의 지향적 속성은 세대를 뛰어넘어 공유되고 있으므로 전형 구성하는 고 정적 측면이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 전형 규범을 세우기 위해 다음과 같은 절차를 제안 한다. 첫째, 문화재청은 심사위원들에게 종목 지정과 보유자 인정 당시의 조사보고서 및 필요 자료를 심사위원들에게 제공한다. 둘째, 개별적으로 위의 전형 요소에 대한 답 변을 수합한다. 셋째, 심사위원들을 한 자리에 모아 이견이 있는 사항들을 협의한다.
