With the full implementation of the free semester system, attempts have been made to introduce various contents into the free semester. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the needs and perception of middle school students for school garden and the possibility of linking to the free semester system in order to prepare basic data for introducing the school garden in the middle school free semester course. As a result, the more middle school students had experience in gardening, the higher their participation in gardening programs, and more than 70% of respondents recognized the need for school gardening and related gardening programs. In addition, the more experienced the horticultural program was, the more perceived the need for the gardening and horticultural program, and the higher the intention to participate in the horticultural program related to the garden in connection with the free semester system. It is possible to connect with the free semester system, and opinions that there is a willingness to participate are high in those who have experience in gardening or have experience in gardening. The purpose of the school garden and gardening program to support youth activities did not show a significant difference between social improvement, learning ability enhancement, stress and psychological conflict control, physical health enhancement. There were over 50% of opinions that the possibility of linking the school garden and gardening program to the free semester system was possible, and the arts and physics activity was the highest in the free semester area that could be linked, but the subjects selection activities, club activities, and career exploration activities were all selected by 20%. The difference in recognition was not great. The preferences of middle school students in the area of horticultural activity were in order of plant raising activity, cooking activity using plants, decoration and crafting activities using plants, and preference was given to plant raising activities regardless of gender, but higher in male students. In addition, it was found that the craft activity was highly favored by female students. For gardening plants, regardless of gender, preference was given in order of fruits, herbs, and flower, preference for school garden facilities was high in order of sunscreen, greenhouse, tables, and chair. And In order to manage the school garden, finances, educational programs, staff assignment, and related books were in order.

자유학기제의 전면시행으로 다양한 콘텐츠를 자유학기에 도입하기 위한 시도가 이루어지고 있 다. 이에 본 연구는 중학교 자유학기제 과정에 학교텃밭을 도입하기 위한 기초자료를 마련하기 위 하여 중학생들이 인식하는 학교텃밭에 대한 요구와 자유학기제 연계 가능성 등을 분석하기 위해 수행되었다. 그 결과 중학생에게 있어 텃밭활동 경험이 있을수록 원예프로그램 참여 경험이 높았고, 응답자의 70% 이상이 학교텃밭 및 관련한 원예프로그램 필요성을 인식하고 있었으며, 학교텃밭 필요성을 인식할수록 원예프로그램도 필요하다고 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 원예프로그램 경 험이 있을수록 텃밭 및 원예프로그램 필요성을 더욱 인식하는 것으로 나타났으며 자유학기제와 연 계 한 텃밭 관련 원예프로그램에 참여할 의사가 높았다. 텃밭활동을 하고 있거나 해본 경험이 있는 대상에서 자유학기제와 연계가 가능하며, 참여의사가 있다는 의견이 높았으며, 원예프로그램 경험 이 있는 대상에서 참여의사가 높았다. 청소년 활동 지원을 위한 학교텃밭 및 원예프로그램 운영의 목적은 사회성 증진이 가장 높았으나 사회성 증진, 학습능력 강화, 신체건강 강화, 스트레스 및 심 리적 갈등 조절 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 학교텃밭 및 원예프로그램의 자유학기제 연 계 가능성에 대해서는 가능하다는 의견이 50%를 넘었고 연계 가능한 자유학기 영역으로는 예술체 육활동이 가장 높았으나 주제선택, 동아리활동, 진로탐색 영역도 모두 약 20%대를 차지하여 크게 차이가 없었다. 원예활동 영역에 대한 중학생의 선호는 식물 기르기 활동, 식물을 이용한 요리활 동, 식물을 이용한 장식 및 공예활동 순으로 선호를 보였으며, 식물 기르기 활동에 대한 선호는 남 학생에서 더 높았고, 공예활동은 여학생 선호가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 원예식물에 대해서는 성별 에 상관없이 꽃, 허브, 과일의 순으로 선호가 높았고, 학교텃밭 시설 선호는 햇빛가림막, 온실, 테 이블 및 의자 순으로 높게 나타났으며, 학교텃밭 관리를 위해 필요한 사항은 재정마련, 교육 프로 그램, 전담 인력 배치, 관련 도서 비치 순이었다.
