The aim of this study is to review and to examine the empirical evidence published since 1990 on male caregiver by analyzing published abroad literature articles. Searches were conducted on web-based search engines using database-specific controlled vocabulary related to male and caregiving. A total of 20 articles were selected for inclusion. Studies were grouped into three themes for review: primary objective stressors, secondary subjective stressors, outcomes. As result of reviewing the selected literatures, men’s experiences of caregiving has negative effects and association on psychological outcomes. Moderating variables and context between male caregiving and the negative outcomes were caregiving tasks, role perception, caregiver identity, coping strategies, social services. The findings of the current review suggest that multi dimensional quantitative study linked with male carer. The implications for the review are discussed, along with directions for future research.

고령사회 내 비공식적 가족돌봄이 지속되는 가운데, 남성돌봄자에 대한 관심이 필요한 시점이다. 이 에 본 연구는 국외에서 관련 연구가 시작된 1990년부터 2019년까지 게재된 남성돌봄자 관련 문헌들을 체계적으로 고찰하고, 향후 정책적, 실천적 개선을 위한 기초 근거자료를 제공하고자 한다. 연구방법은 전자 데이터베이스를 이용하여 문헌들을 검색하고, 체계적 문헌고찰 방법에 따라 검토하여 최종적으로 20편의 연구를 선정하였다. 선정된 연구들에 대해서 연구의 일반적 특성 및 남성돌봄자의 돌봄 경험과 관련된 객관적 차원, 주관적 차원, 결과물에 해당되는 변인을 측정도구와 함께 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 심리정서적 결과물과 영향요인을 이론적 틀에 근거해 체계적으로 고찰하였다. 연구결과, 총 20편의 문 헌은 2편을 제외하고 모두 횡단연구였으며, 남성만을 대상으로 한 연구는 소수였다. 별도의 이론이나 모델을 활용하기 보다는, 개별적인 변수를 토대로 남성돌봄자의 돌봄 맥락을 파악하고자 하였다. 측정 도구는 변수마다 다양하게 활용되었으나 임의에 따라 문항을 조합하여 사용하는 경우도 있었다. 객관 적 스트레스 요인의 경우 성별 차이 및 돌봄대상자의 특성이 주요함을 확인할 수 있었지만, 일부는 관련성이 나타나지 않았다. 심리정서적 결과물과 관련하여 주관적 차원의 인식, 자원, 대처의 중요성을 확인할 수 있었다. 국내 남성돌봄자 연구는 아직 소수의 대상자만을 대상으로 수행되고 있고 문화적 특성을 충분히 고려하지 못한 경향이 있으므로, 한국적 특수성을 반영한 객관적인 실증연구가 필요하다. 또한 돌봄대상자의 권리만 강조하기 보다는 남성돌봄자의 관점을 고려한 서비스를 개발할 것을 제언한다.
