Usmaíl depicts the history of Vieques from the 1930s to the 50s through lives of Usmaíl's family. The miserable life of the family, led by Quico (1st generation)-Chefa (2nd generation)-Usmaíl (3rd generation), interacts with the ‘Insulting World’. This study intends to expand the reality of the novel-that was obtained by detailed and specific regional-based realism to our contemporary age by revealing insulting world's principle and the types of individual responses of people. The pattern of response to the insulting world is analyzed for each person. First, the principle Quico went through is dehumanization. His response to the world and its outcome were paranoid delusions and death. Second, the principle that Chefa experienced was colonization, and her response and its result were subordination and death. Finally, the principle that Usmaíl went through was militarization. Unlike the previous generations, Usmaíl does resistance and is caught by the police. In this study, this is interpreted as a temporary death. Usmaíl's family seek a survival way in insulting world that has strengthened through generations. But the result is all death. The novel describes in detail how difficult it is to live as a resisting human in insulting world. In addition, it draws the conclusion that living as an unresisting human in insulting world results in death. At the same time, through Usmaíl, it simultaneously shows the meaning and limitations of the individual resistance. The situation of Usmaíl in the ending of the novel can be read as the end of an era dominated by the pattern of ‘insulting world-individual response-death’ and the beginning of a new era. Recognize the principles of the insulting world, face the problem without distortion, and resist ‘together’. That is the moment when we start our life as the decent human being.

소설 『우스마일』 은 1930년대부터 50년대까지 비에케스 풍경을 우스마일 가족을 통해 그 려낸다. 키코(1대)-체파(2대)-우스마일(3대)로 이어진 가족의 신산한 삶은 그 삶을 둘러싼 ‘모욕하 는 세계’와 상호작용한다. 본고는 모욕을 만들어내는 세계의 원리와 구성원의 대응 유형을 밝혀 세밀하고 구체적인 지역 기반 리얼리즘 소설의 당대성을 확장된 의미로 이해한다. 모욕을 사적 관계에서 벌어지는 행위가 아니라 공적 관계에서 작동하는 구조적 행위로 이해함으로써 가장된 탈식민화의 세계에서 여전한 식민성의 그늘을 모욕이란 개념으로 포착할 수 있다. 비에케스가 미 국의 군사식민지로 편입되는 과정은 곧 식민화와 군사화의 과정이기도 했다. 본문에서는 모욕하 는 세계가 작동하는 원리를 각 인물별로 분석했다. 첫째, 키코가 겪은 원리는 비인간화다. 그 세 계에 대한 키코의 대응과 결과는 편집증적 망상과 죽음이었다. 둘째, 체파가 겪은 원리는 식민화 였고, 그에 대한 체파의 대응과 결과는 종속됨과 죽음이었다. 마지막으로 우스마일이 겪은 원리 는 군사화다. 우스마일은 이전 세대와 달리 일말의 저항의식을 가졌고 저항 행위를 한 뒤 경찰에 붙잡힌다. 본문에서는 이를 개인적 저항에 따른 잠정적인 죽음으로 해석한다. 소설 속 개인들은 세 대를 거쳐 강화되는 모욕하는 세계 속에서 생존 대응을 모색한다. 그러나 결과는 모두 자연사가 아 닌 죽음이다. 소설은 모욕하는 세계에서 저항하는 인간으로 살아간다는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인 지 자세히 묘사한다. 또한 모욕하는 세계에서 저항하지 않는 인간으로 살아가면 죽음뿐이란 결론 을 도출한다. 동시에 우스마일을 통해 저항하는 ‘개인’으로서 행위가 갖는 의미와 한계를 동시에 보여준다. 소설의 결말 속 우스마일의 모습은 ‘모욕하는 세계-개인의 대응-죽음’이란 패턴이 지 배하는 시대의 끝이자 새로운 시작을 예비하는 시작의 가능성도 품고 있다. 모욕하는 세계의 원 리를 인식할 것, 무엇이 문제인지 왜곡 없이 직시할 것, ‘함께’ 저항할 것. 그것이 품위 있는 인간 으로서 삶을 시작하는 순간이다.
