Luis Sepúlveda has been paying attention to Chilean politics, human rights, and social issues through various genres. The author has worked as a member of UNESCO and Greenpeace to solve the acute problems of mankind. Therefore, while dealing with historical realities, he links them to modern universal political and social issues. His two works, 『Marginalized histories』and 『Histories of here and there』focus on political and social problems through memories of alienated and oppressed figures and episodes related to them. These works mainly illustrate anecdotes related to “the unknown heroes” rather than historical figures. It’s a story about little heroes who are unknown to us but deserve applause. Sepúlveda claims that we should not forget them. He argues that it is important to know the past in order to understand the present and envisage the future. The two works are significant in that they discuss a critical outlook on marginalized and distorted historical reality. What the author actually wants, however, is not despair and frustration, but a world of dreams and hopes. Beyond the world we have experienced, he builds a future where universal human values are recognized.

루이스 세뿔베다는 다양한 장르를 통해 칠레 정치와 인권, 사회문제에 관심을 기울여왔다. 유네스코와 그린피스 회원으로 활동하면서 인류 전체의 첨예한 문제 해결을 위해 직접 행동에 나 서기도 했다. 그는 역사적 현실을 다루면서도 현대의 보편적 정치·사회문제와 연결시킨다. 두 편 의 여행기 『소외된 이야기』와 『길 끝에서 만난 이야기』는 소외되고 억압받는 인물들과 그들과 관 계된 일화에 대한 기억을 통해 정치·사회적 문제점을 시사하고 있다. 두 작품 모두 역사적 인물보 다는 ‘이름 없는 영웅들’과 얽힌 일화를 기억하며 소환한다. 우리에게 알려지지 않았지만 박수 받 을 만한 가치가 있는 작은 영웅들에 관한 이야기다. 세뿔베다는 이들을 잊지 말 것을 주문한다. 그는 망각을 두려워한다. 현재를 이해하고 미래를 상상하기 위해서는 과거를 아는 것이 중요하다 고 믿기 때문이다. 두 작품은 <소외되고 일그러진 역사적 현실에 대한 비판적 전망>이라는 의미 있는 구조를 보여주고 있지만, 정작 작가가 바라는 것은 절망과 좌절이 아니라 꿈과 희망이 있는 세상이다. 우리가 경험한 세상 저 너머에 있는, 인간의 보편적 가치가 인정되는 미래의 건설을 꿈꾸고 있다.
