The Bhiksuni(bhikkhuṇīhi, Buddhist nun) Religious Order in Theravāda Buddhism was established while Saṅghamittā is, who is a daughter of King Ashoka, came over to Sri Lanka together with 11 other bhiksunis around the 3rd century B.C. After that, even the Bhiksuni Religious Order was smoothly developed along with the progress in Sri Lankan Buddhism. However, the genealogy was severed by war and famine around the 11th-12th centuries, resulting in having been passed over a thousand years. There were many efforts to restore Theravāda Bhiksuni Religious Order, which was discontinued in this way. The number of monks are increasing now who received bhiksuni ordination in many countries with Theravāda Buddhism. But the Bhiksu Sangha(bhikkhu-saṅgha) in the countries with Theravāda Buddhism is not recognizing bhiksuni ordination yet. Thus, the environment of asceticism such as dwelling failed to be perfect because of being unable to receive a support by Sangha or a country. In this situation, it also examined the hard work of monks as a leader in each country together who strive to restore the bhiksuni genealogy and to improve the environment of asceticism. They were examined to be making the best effort in the given environment even today for reviving the traditional Bhiksu·Bhiksuni Sangha even in the difficult environment such as being interrupted, expelled and imprisoned from the bhiksu sangha.

상좌부불교의 비구니 교단은 기원전 3세기경 아쇼카(Ashoka)왕의 딸인 상가밋타(Saṅghamittā)가 다른 비구니들과 함께 스리랑카로 건너오면서 성립되었다. 그 후 스리랑카 불교발전과 더불어 비구니 교단도 순조롭게 발전하였다. 그러나 11~12세기경 전쟁과 기아 등으로 계맥이 단절되어 1천 여 년의 세월이 지났다. 이렇게 단절된 상좌부 비구니 승단을 복원하기 위한 여러 가지 노력이 있었고 지금은 상좌부불교 여러 나라에 비구니계를 받은 스님들이 늘어나고 있다. 그러나 상좌부불교 국가의 비구 승단에서 아직 비구니 수계를 인정하고 있지 않다. 그래서 승단이나 국가적 지원을 받을 수 없어 주거 등 수행환경이 원만하지 못하다. 이러한 상황에서 비구니 계맥 복원과 수행환경 개선을 위해 애쓰는 각국의 지도자 스님들의 노고도 함께 살펴보았다. 그들은 비구 승단으로부터 방해를 받고 제명되고 투옥되는 등 어려운 환경에서도 전통적인 비구·비구니 승가의 복원을 위해 오늘도 주어진 환경에서 최선의 노력을 하고 있음을 살펴보았다.
