This study shows that the instrumentalization of motherhood is getting serious in the neoliberal age, through analysis of motherhood and the grotesque figuration of elderly women’s body in Kim Sum’s Women and Evolving Enemies. The motherhood of the daughter-in-law, who promotes upper-class mobility in the home in the neo-liberal age of the 21st century, is described as her care ethic based on "hygiene" while the motherhood of the daughter-in-law, who made sacrifices for her family in the industrial age of the 20th century, is embodied by her care ethic based on "consolation and warmth". This new patriarchal system shows that a young woman cares for and maintains her family by exploiting her old mother-in-law who is weaker than herself. Author Kim Sum intensifies a new aspect with the "repetitive" and "grotesque" aesthetic. In the novel, the daughter-in-law internalizes a new type of patriarchal system. So in the daughter-in-law’s view, the mother-in-law becomes a target to exclude because she embodies a motherhood which does not meet the needs of the times. The novel metaphorically illustrates a terrible mechanism that continues to exploit motherhood by a Korean family ideology that regards the elderly women`s grotesque body as a rational change.

이 연구는 김숨의 『여인들과 진화하는 적들』 (2013)에 나타난 모성의 존 재성과 그로테스크하게 형상화된 노년 여성의 몸을 분석하면서, 신자유주 의 시대 더욱 심각해지는 모성 도구화 양상을 살펴보았다. 이 소설의 중 요한 특징은 줄리아 크리스테바가 언급한 ‘자아가 상징 질서 속에서 정상 적 주체가 되기 위해 침과 같은 아브젝트(abject)를 추방하는 아브젝시옹 (abjection) 현상’이 남성과 여성 간이 아닌 여성과 여성 간에 일어난다는 사 실이다. 『여인들과 진화하는 적들』에서 21세기 신자유주의 시기 가정의 계층 상승을 도모하는 며느리의 모성은 ‘위생’의 돌봄 윤리를, 20세기 산업화 시 기 가족을 위해 희생했던 시어머니의 모성은 ‘위안과 따뜻함’의 돌봄 윤리 로 형상화된다. 즉, 경제적으로 무능해진 아버지의 빈 공간을 모성의 재발명을 통해 메우는 새로운 가부장제의 한 형태는, 젊은 여성이 자신보다 더 약자인 노년의 어머니를 착취하면서 가정을 지탱하는 것이다. 김숨은 이러한 양상을 ‘반복’과 ‘그로테스크’의 미학을 통해 첨예화시킨다. 새로운 형태의 가부장 질서가 내재화된 며느리의 시선에서 시어머니는 시대적 요구에 부합하지 못하는 모성을 지닌 존재로서 배제해야 할 대상이 된다. 노년 여성의 그로테스크한 몸은 합리적으로 변화한 것처럼 여겨지는 한 국의 가족 이데올로기가 사실은 얼마나 끔찍한 모성 착취의 메커니즘을 지속적으로 생산하는지를 은유적으로 보여준다.
