In this study, we wanted to look at the status of Japanese loanwords used at construction sites, noting the nature of word type and the possibility that the same loanwords have different statuses. As a method, 10 vocabulary words with a correspondence between the three types of fish were investigated by the SD Act on language images to the employees and the general public, and each of them was analyzed by vocabulary and species to examine their respective characteristics. The Korean, Japanese, and English used at construction sites were given different images, and the perception and evaluation of construction workers and the general public were common and different. Among them, Japanese loanwords were not well-received in terms of ‘good and bad’ or language norms, but they were highly regarded in terms of ‘professional’ or ‘efficiency’ and were much stronger for construction workers. Through this, it can be thought that Japanese loanwords serve as ‘professional terms(jargon)’ for those engaged in the construction industry and serve as ‘technical jargon’ that distinguish between industry workers and the general public, or skilled engineers and beginners.

본 연구에서는 어종이라는 어휘의 속성과 함께 동일한 외래어라도 서로 다른 위상을 지니고 있을 가능성에 주목하여 건설 현장에서 사용되는 일본어계 외래어의 위상에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법으로는 3개 어종 간의 대응 관계를 지니고 있는 10개의 어휘를 대상으로 해당 직무 종사자와 일반인에게 언어 이미지에 대해 SD법에 의해 조사하였으며, 이를 어휘별, 어종별로 분석하여 각각의 특성을 고찰하였다. 건설 현장에서 사용되고 있는 한국어, 일본어계 외래어, 타 언어(영어) 외래어에는 각각 다른 이미지가 부여되어 있으며 건설업 종사자와 일반인의 인식 및 평가가 서로 공통되는 것도 있고 상이한 것도 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이 중, 일본어계 외래어는 ‘좋고 나쁨’, 즉 언어규범의 측면에서는 좋은 평가를 받지 못하지만 ‘전문성’이나 ‘효용성’의 면에서는 높은 평가를 받고 있었고 건설업 종사자에게는 그 정도가 훨씬 강했다. 이를 통해 일본어계 외래어는 건설업에 종사하는 이들에게 ‘전문용어’로서 역할하며, 업계 종사자와 일반인, 또는 숙련된 기술자와 초보자를 구별 짓는 ‘기술적 배타표현’으로 기능하고 있다고 생각할 수 있다.
