This study is to study Pohang Sea International Theater Festival among art festivals that can actively interact with each other in local festivals that have developed rapidly since the local government in 1995. Pohang is a steel-oriented industrial city, but it is also a city with a natural environment such as the sea, mountains, and valleys, and a city with many tourist resources. Through these characteristics, the Pohang Sea International Theater Festival can be said to be a cultural and arts festival that represents the region held centering on the peculiarity and regional characteristics of the city of Pohang, and a festival that utilizes the functions and meanings of art as an arts festival. In particular, it can be said that the Pohang Sea International Theater Festival, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, has made various attempts in terms of regional specialty as well as the characteristics of the performing arts festival. The festival was held through various attempts such as selecting various topics and changing the overall concept of the festival. Therefore, in this paper, the current status of the Pohang Sea International Theater Festival, which has been held since 2001, will be reviewed and the development plans and future strategies will be presented. Through this, I hope the Pohang Sea International Theater Festival will emerge as a global theater festival as well as Pohang.

본 연구는 1995년 지방자치제 이후 급속하게 발전하게 된 지역 축제에 있어 예술간의 상호작용을 활 발히 할 수 있는 예술축제 중 포항바다국제연극제에 대하여 연구해보고자 한다. 포항은 철강중심의 산업 도시이기도 하지만 천혜한 자연환경인 바다, 산, 계곡 등을 보유한 도시이기도 하며 관광자원이 많은 도 시이기도 하다. 이러한 특성을 통해 포항바다국제연극제는 포항이라는 도시의 특수성 및 지역적 특성을 중심으로 개최된 지역을 대표하는 문화예술축제인 동시에 예술축제로서 예술이 가지고 있는 기능과 의 미들을 잘 살린 축제라고 할 수 있다. 지역의 공연예술제는 공연예술제만의 특색과 지역적 특수성이 가 미가 되어 예술로서의 전문성을 극대화 하고, 지역적 특수성을 제고 할 수 있어야 한다고 본다. 이렇게 볼 때, 특정지역의 공연예술제가 성공할 수 있도록 진행되고 있는 내용을 종합적으로 분석하여 그 발전 방향을 제시하는 연구는 매우 필요하다고 하겠다. 이에, 본 연구는 지난 2001년부터 동해바다의 천혜의 수려한 자연환경과 포항의 지역적 특수성을 살려 지금까지 매년 개최되고 있는 포항바다국제연극제를 중심으로 어떠한 지역적 특수성과 인프라를 중심으로 본 연극제가 개최되고 있는지, 연극제에 대한 어떠 한 정체성이 있는지에 대한 포항바다국제연극제의 현황을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 미래전망과 발전방안을 모색하는데 목적을 둔다. 특히 올해로 20회를 맞는 포항바다국제연극제는 지역적 특수성뿐만 아니라 공 연예술제의 특성에 있어 다양한 시도를 했다고 할 수 있다. 다양한 주제의 선정, 축제의 컨셉에 대한 전 반적인 변모 등 여러 가지 시도를 통해 축제를 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 포항바다국제연극제의 현황을 살펴보고 이에 대한 발전 방안과 미래 전략을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 통해 포항바다국제연극제가 포항뿐 만 아니라 세계적인 연극축제로서 발돋움하길 바란다.
